New Subaru Outback Vs Used - Why You Don’t Want A Lightly-Used Model Now

Should you buy a new 2024 Subaru Outback or a lightly used 1- to 5-year-old used Outback? See why buying a new model is your best choice now. 

Affordable used models are vanishing if you are looking for a lightly-used Subaru Outback. A recent report from iSeeCars says the average used car's price has increased by 47.7 percent since the pandemic. A used Subaru Outback is now among the top 15 models that are the hardest to find, priced under $20,000. 

iSeeCars analyzed over 10.8 million 1- to 5-year-old used cars and found the average used car cost $22,493 in 2015, with a slight bump to $23,351 in 2019. But over the last four years, used car prices have exploded – ballooning to $34,491 in 2023, a 47.7 percent rise, averaging more than 10 percent each year.

iSeeCars data reveals In 2019, about 25 % of used Subaru Outback models cost less than $20,000. But in 2023, only 3 percent of them are priced under $20,000, and these same used models also have nearly twice as much mileage as they did in 2019.

  • The Subaru Outback subcompact SUV is number fifteen on the list of least affordable used cars you can buy today.
  • The Subaru Outback's average price of a used model in 2019 was $23,433. In 2023, the average cost is now $29,413, an increase of 25.5 percent.
  • The Subaru Outback's share of used car sales that cost less than $20,000 in 2019 was 24.5%. 
  • The share of used Outback sales that cost less than $20,000 in 2023 is now 3.0%. 
  • The percentage change in share is -87.7%
  • The average mileage for a used Outback that cost less than $20,000 in 2019 was 69,355.
  • The average mileage for a used Outback that cost more than $20,000 in 2023 is now 104,276.
  • The percentage of change in the average Outback mileage is 50.4%.

The Base Outback now comes with dome and cargo area lights that have been upgraded to LED.

Outback Onyx Edition upgrades

The standard 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system is now paired with a Harman Kardon speaker system with a 576-watt equivalent amplifier. In addition, the Onyx Edition now comes standard with a Power Moonroof, Reverse Automatic Braking, and a 360-degree heated steering wheel is now standard.

Outback Wilderness upgrades

For 2024, the Outback Wilderness now receives a more rugged look thanks to a new front fascia featuring a redesigned bumper and LED fog lights paired with a more prominent front grille. In addition, a 360-degree heated steering wheel is now standard on the Outback Wilderness.

Onyx Edition XT

A 360-degree heated steering wheel is now standard on the Outback Onyx Edition XT. This feature was only offered on higher trim levels the previous year.

What is the price of a 2024 Subaru Outback?

For the 2024 model year, the Outback will be available in nine trim levels. The Base is priced at $30,190, Premium ($32,490), Onyx Edition ($37,400), Limited ($37,090), Touring ($41,640), Onyx Edition XT ($40,655), Wilderness ($41,255), Limited XT ($41,490), and Touring XT ($44,090). In addition, destination and delivery fees are included in the price above ($1,295).

Affordability will be an issue if you are looking for a used 2018-2022 used Subaru Outback. The Subaru Outback midsize SUV is number fifteen on the list of least affordable used cars you can buy today.
