The Safest New SUVs This Year - Subaru Scores Only Two (Where Is Outback?)

What are the best Subaru models for safety? A new report from Kelley Blue Book says the 2023 Subaru Ascent and 2023 Subaru Solterra EV are the safest. But where is the Subaru Outback?

Subaru has safe vehicles, but which models are the safest in a crash? A recent Kelley Blue Book (KBB) report ranks the safest new cars and SUVs you can buy today. KBB says the 2023 Subaru Ascent and 2023 Subaru Solterra EV are the safest. But where is the 2023 Subaru Outback?

KBB says the 2023 Subaru Ascent is one of the best SUVs for safety. They give the best value trim level, base trim price, and fuel mileage.

Best Safety Value: $36,495 (Premium)

Base Price: $33,895 | Expert Rating: 4.2

Combined Fuel Economy: 22 mpg

KBB says, "There are many more good things about the AWD Subaru Ascent than its safety resume, but we'll stick to the safety theme. Typically, we advise leapfrogging the Base version of most Subaru models in favor of the Premium trim because there is so little price difference. It's still solid advice for the Ascent; however, it's not as persuasive when the topic is safety. Although the Premium provides much additional content, only a small portion concerns safety. The Base trim has auto-on-off adaptive LED headlights, high-beam assist, and seven airbags. LKA and ACC with lane-centering assist are leading off the advanced safety technologies."

"Moving up a notch to Premium ($36,495) gains you heated outboard mirrors, BSM with steering assist, and RCTA. We are still going to give the nod to the Premium grade. There is so much other value there (8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats, tri-zone automatic climate control, and so forth)."KBB says the 2023 Subaru Solterra is also one of the best SUVs for safety. They give the best value trim level, base trim price, and MPGe.

Best Safety Value: $48,495 (Limited)

Base Price: $44,995 | Expert Rating: 4.3

Combined Fuel Economy: 104 MPGe

2023 Subaru Solterra gets the top safety score from KBBDon't Miss This Related Story: Subaru’s First EV, the Solterra Gets Top Marks In New IIHS Side Impact Crash Test

KBB says, "The Solterra is Subaru's first swing at an all-electric vehicle and the first of four SUV EVs forecasted by management by the close of 2026. It shares DNA with the Toyota bZ4X. It's AWD with a government-estimated range of 228 miles. Another of our picks that has yet to be rated by NHTSA, the Solterra, wowed the IIHS, earning it TSP+ status (for vehicles built after October 2022). It provides several of our suggested safety features as standard, beginning with hill-start assist. Others include auto on/off LED headlights, high-beam assist, heated outboard mirrors, windshield wiper de-icer, and safe-exit assist."

"On the list of safety technologies are JTA, LDA, LTA, ACC, TSR, BSM, and RCTA. Stepping up to the Limited trim will set you back $48,495. Still, it has a surround-view camera, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, outboard mirrors with integrated turn signals, LED fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, and scads of extra non-safety features. It's a lot of extras for $3,500. We recommend going for the Limited."

Where is the 2023 Subaru Outback?

The Subaru Outback is arguably Subaru's safest new vehicle, but it's not on KBB's list.

Subaru Outback safety

Subaru's EyeSight safety technology with the Wide-angle Mono Camera debuted on top trims of the 2023 Subaru Outback and 2023 Legacy and is offered as standard equipment on the 2023 Ascent family hauler.

Because many accidents with bicycles and pedestrians occur around an intersection, the new vision sensor will help detect children and bicycles entering the road suddenly from the side and apply the Outback, Ascent, and Legacy brakes.

The new safety technology uses Subaru's EyeSight driver assist system that processes the recognized information and first gives an alert to the driver. Then, it applies brakes to avoid collisions with crossing bicycles and pedestrians when necessary. In case of an accident, the system helps to mitigate the damage.
