The Top-Selling Subaru Outback Drops to 2nd Place Before A Hot New Trim Arrives

New model shoppers are still picking the 2023 Subaru Outback, but the midsize SUV can’t keep pace with one Subaru model. See where the Outback is now before a hot new trim arrives this fall.

The 2023 Subaru Outback is the best pick for new midsize SUV shoppers, but there is one better-performing model for Subaru of America. That distinction goes to the Subaru Forester compact SUV. The two models are in a race for the top spot in SOA's all-wheel-drive lineup, and the Forester edges out the Outback in August by 791 model sales.

The race is tight in August for the best-selling Subaru model.

The Outback is in second place in August but still leads for the year. The 2023 Subaru Outback midsize SUV is the second-place performer in the lineup, increasing 32.7 percent in August, with 14,503 models sold compared with 10,928 in August 2022. Outback is now up 11.7 percent in the first eight months of 2023.

Forester is now up 31.7 percent in the first eight months of 2023. Forester has 91,108 models sold in 2023 and remains in third place overall.

Troy Poston, Senior Vice President of Sales at Subaru of America, said, "When it comes to drivers looking for adventure, longevity, and safety, our family of award-winning and trusted vehicles continues to be a top choice."

The top choice for Outback customers is the new Outback Wilderness trim level. The rugged outdoor-themed Wilderness has been the most popular Outback trim. And it gets better for the 2024 model year.

"Enthusiasm for our Wilderness models, available in Outback, Forester, and, coming soon, Crosstrek, remains exceptionally high as car buyers plan their next adventure," said Poston.
