Ford has designed the 2015 Mustang to appeal on a global level and while a hatchback model has been discussed we can only hope that it either doesn’t come to volition or it at least doesn’t look like the car shown above – as this 2015 Ford Mustang Wagon is a little funny looking to say the least.
A while back, Ford Mustang chief engineer Dave Pericak stated in an a handful of interviews that all sorts of features that would be very non-traditional for the mighty Mustang have been considered in order to help the car compete on a global level. Ford took a big step towards globalization with the introduction of the new 2.3L EcoBoost as the first “base” engine for the European market, but there are other ideas that haven’t become reality just yet such as a diesel engine, a sedan and a wagon design. It is hard to imagine a 2015 Ford Mustang wagon and fortunately, we don’t have to imagine one as a Hungarian automotive artist who goes by X-Tomi has rendered the 2015 Mustang wagon shown above.
Like much of X-Tomi’s other work, the 2015 Ford Mustang Wagon is a very well done piece of design artwork. If I didn’t know better, I would guess that this could be an actual car sitting somewhere safely behind the walls of Ford’s design studios and while many of the lines of the 2015 Mustang have been preserved – this is one funky looking vehicle. I personally don’t care for what I can see but that is mostly because I really like the new fastback design of the 2015 Mustang and with this wagon design; that is gone. The long, sloping roofline of this Mustang Wagon actually looks pretty nice, but when combined with the long front end of the S550 Mustang this wagon rendering has an odd, awkward look.
Perhaps a real world 2015 Ford Mustang Wagon would look better in person than this well-done rendering, but I would guess that it would still have odd proportions. If this idea of a more cargo friendly 2015 Mustang actually came to production, I would expect that it would only be offered in markets outside of the US as I can only imagine the outcry of the Mustang community if Ford rolled out a hatchback version of the fabled American muscle car. There has been the regular rumor that a Mustang sedan is coming and that regularly draws a great deal of negative attention from the Mustang community. If this roomier Mustang does arrive sometime, we know for sure that they would never call it a wagon in the US as that has almost become profanity in the American auto industry for something to be called a wagon – and a Mustang Wagon would be borderline blasphemous to the most devoted of Ford fans.
Realistically, I don’t believe that we will see a 2015 or 2016 or 2017 Ford Mustang hatchback/wagon here in the US, but with this type of vehicle being so popular in the European market – it doesn’t seem completely out of the question for one to be created in the future for overseas markets. It could still look a little funky when the Mustang Wagon arrives in Europe but let’s be honest, Europeans have a very different taste in vehicles than do Americans so an American muscle wagon might just succeed in Europe.
