The 2015 Ford Mustang brings about the newest generation of the fabled muscle car and with the design being such a hot topic, these internal sketches from Ford Motor Company lend a ton of insight into the inspiration of the S550 Mustang both inside and out.
Ford has offered up a quartet of early concept drawings of what would become the 2015 Mustang with a shot of the S550 from the front, the rear, above and inside. Each of the images includes notes that accentuate the key features of the 2015 Mustang and the inspiration behind the most significant aspects of the S550 design.
Some of the more vital pieces of 2015 Mustang design information indicate that the front end was inspired by the 1968 Mustang, the nose of the car was designed to create a “shark bite” form and the bugling hood was shaped this way to represent a fist punching out. Key highlighted features include the rear diffuser, the tri bar taillights, the Coke bottle shaped side lines, the dual roof bubbles and the fact that the 2015 Mustang reincarnates the super sleek fastback form. The notes on the interior sketch are a bit harder to read but we can see the key features of the cabin as well with emphasis on the retro styled steering wheel, the race inspired gauge setup and the dual panel dash that is reminiscent of the 1969 Mustang.
One interesting aspect of these sketches is that the front of this 2015 Ford Mustang has the angular grille filler of the Mustang GT while the back end has the running pony emblem in the black tail light panel - a feature of the EcoBoost and V6 Mustang models. There arent any badges to indicate whether this artwork shows a 2015 Mustang V6, EcoBoost or GT but based on the mixture of design cues, I suspect that these drawings are simply showing the key features of the S550 Mustang in general rather than focusing on a specific package. Fortunately, it seems that all of the 2015 Mustang packages will offer the same basic exterior design so for the first time ever; V6 buyers and GT buyers will have cars that look very similar all around.
On one hand, I imagine that these images will give critics of the 2015 Ford Mustang more ammunition as people cry foul at any comparisons between this newest Mustang and those models from the late 1960s but on the other hand – whether you like the new look or not – these sparse notes explain what the designers were going after with this new look. Best of all, these sketches and notes draw out those aspects of the 2015 Ford Mustang that are the most important in making the S550 Mustang what it is from top to bottom, inside and out.
While there are still plenty of people out there who don’t like the application of the Evos design language to the 2015 Ford Mustang, the more I see the new muscle car – both in pictures and in drawings like these – the more I like the new Mustang design. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the start of the 2014 North American International Auto Show next week will bring more official information on the 2015 Mustang but until then; check out all of the S550 concept sketches by clicking any of the thumbnails above!
