To buy hybrid or go conventional? As the auto industry turns to electrification in the righteous quest for near zero emissions, greater fuel efficiency, and torque, 2018 Honda Accord “normalizes” the hybrid drive and ride experience.
Last year while roaming the streets of Tokyo, one glaring difference between the Asian and U.S. car market was driven home -- in Japan, hybrid electrification is the norm, with the internal combustion engine used in most applications for co-generation. Here at home, with the price of retail gasoline hovering well below $3 per gallon in most regions, the car buying public all but shuns the electrified automobile, opting instead for a generally lower MSRP conventional powered car or light truck.
And yet, as stated by our good friends at Green Car Journal, the writing's on the wall; electrification and the auto industry has hit a momentous tipping point.
No longer a matter of if, but when, the automotive industry is embracing electrification, gasoline will go the way of the kerosene reading lamp, with Honda riding the crest of that first wave of transition. So you don’t want hybrid, check out this Accord.
2018 Honda Accord presents a 3rd generation hybrid electric alternative without compromise
It wasn't long ago that purchasing a gasoline, electric hybrid car came with a long list of compromise; car size, less interior volume, and in some cases, more specifically, the sedan class, a small to nonexistent trunk, with no cabin to trunk access via the second row seating; and then there was the measurably higher MSRP.
Consumers who preferred a sedan configuration would settle for a small hatchback, or crossover, in a quest for greater interior space and utility. A very innovative Honda Motor Company presents a manufactured in Ohio 2018 Honda Accord 4-door hybrid sedan that will “normalize,” the mainstream family sedan buying experience with 2-key innovations. The current Accord hybrid is the most fuel efficient sedan on the road today.
2018 Honda Accord Hybrid features a huge trunk with pass-through capability
Thanks to ever-evolving Lithium Ion battery development, greater charge density results in a smaller battery module with the same charge-hold capacity. Removed from behind Accord’s second seating row to below the seat, results in not only a lower center of gravity, but an unobstructed, 60/40 split drop-down seat with clear pass through access to the trunk, allowing the transport of longer objects.
2018 Honda Accord Hybrid now presents the same trunk volume of the conventional sedan; with no loss of electric charge and regeneration capacity. Torque News first met Honda Accord Hybrid in Davis, California.
The bigger trunk is good, removing the higher MSRP price constraint is better
So, Honda does both: The 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid comes to market in early 2018 with an expanded trim walk and a lower entry level MSRP.
Honda’s intent with 2018 Accord is to present an affordable hybrid option for just above entry level midsize car buyers. While Honda has not committed on price or availability, we’re assured by Honda P.R. that the target price is “$ thousands” below the present offering; with Honda Sensing ™, active safety suite, a user preference heads up display, and an expanded touch-pad-like floating center stack touchscreen, all standard.
So, in short, you can anticipate a rather well equipped 2018 Accord Hybrid coming to market Q1 2018 with a beginning MSRP settling in the $25,000 range -- that’s my educated guess, based on this week’s visit with Honda. For those that want more electric, the all new Honda Clarity lineup takes auto-electric to the next level in power, range, and refinement.

Does the 2018 Accord Hybrid
Does the 2018 Accord Hybrid have a spare tire? I've got the 2017 and it does not...because of the need to maximize the trunk space...
No, the 2018 hybrid battery
No, the 2018 hybrid battery is under the trunk floor where the spare would normally be.
Actually, @Vig is still
Actually, @Vig is still incorrect. The battery has been reduced by 30% as lithium-ion battery and placed UNDER the rear passenger seating which is why the trunk is back to 16.7 cubic feet! I've been waiting on the 3rd Gen Hybrid by Honda and from my test driving of the 2018 Accord 1.5T Touring Edition, the interior is spectacular! This will be my 3rd Accord (1999, 2008, 2018) and it has everything I desired on the Accord.
Welcome Ray. You won't be
Welcome Ray. You won't be disappointed. The 3rd generation Accord Hybrid is arguably the most refined Accord ever offered by the maker. According to my contacts at Honda, look for the 2018 Accord Hybrid sometime in Q1, 2018.
The well for the spare in
The well for the spare in hybrid is same as non hybrid and a spare will fit. I know because I now have one as well as the tool kit that fits above
So back to the original
So back to the original question, does the 2018 Accord hybrid have a spare tire? The Toyota Camry's battery is under the rear passenger seat as is claimed here for the Honda Accord, and it has a temporary spare tire.
Good question: Frankly, I
Good question: Frankly, I wasn't focused on the spare tire question on my initial drive of 2018 Accord Hybrid. And, because it's not due to market until Q1 2018, Honda has not published detailed specifications for this car. You may wish to note that in the majority of new cars and crossovers, manufacturers opt for emergency tire repair kits due to the fact that most consumers are no qualified to change a tire. By doing so, the manufacturer eliminates any implied liability.
Having been stranded once
Having been stranded once with a sidewall puncture which the sealant and pump couldn't fix, and being capable of changing a tire, Honda may wish to note that several other hybrids do have temporary spare tires (a couple of Prius models, Camrys etc). If the Accord doesn't have one then the Camry will be my next car.
Some Priuses have temporary
Some Priuses have temporary spares, as does the Camry Hybrid. I'm perfectly capable of changing a tire and if Honda doesn't include one, then they may wish to note that a Camry will be my ride.
Take it easy Glen. Take a
Take it easy Glen. Take a moment to look at the trunk photo in the article. It's class-leading-huge. I will answer the spare tire question when I have an answer. Honda does read my column, and takes consumer feedback into account when designing and marketing new car offerings. B.T.W: The new Camry earns your test drive. I recommend driving both offerings before deciding to purchase Honda Accord. Take care.
Thanks for the warm welcome,
Thanks for the warm welcome, @Paul McCants! I forgot a couple of things I am still researching and trying to find out about the new Hybrid Accord: 1) Battery Warranty. Although Toyota never had any real issues with their NiMH batteries, Lith-ion are more susceptible to issues of heat, shorter-life-term-usage, and what not. Does the Warranty cover multiple owners? 2) With or Without Navigation. I believe Garmin was the chosen partner for Nav on this Accord? I think the Touring Trim comes with all this. More to come......
Honda's documentation of the
Honda's documentation of the recently released 2018 Accord hybrid indicates the inclusion of a tire repair kit with 24 hour emergency service as contrasted with the non-hybrid versions, which have a spare tire. I was excited about this car but no spare no purchase.
Yes, I can confirm that you
Yes, I can confirm that you can use a spare tire. I took mine out of my old Acura Legend, (the dealer confirmed it would work on the Honda Accord Hybrid by comparing to the regular Accord spare) bought the plastic hub and the screw in bolt for the regular Accord 2018 spare on ebay, and it fit. Then I had to buy the single most expensive item: that damn foam tray since the stupid one included with the Accord Hybrid won't fit...you have to buy the one for the regular 2018 Accord. Then it fits. That foam piece will run you over 40 bucks at the Honda dealer. Online it looks like it's 20 bucks, but every place would overcharge on shipping by 40 to 60 bucks. I got my dealer to give me a deal on buying the foam tray when I bought the Hybrid. I then just moved my jack and other Acura tools over and they fit in the foam tray.
