The high performance sedan crowd has been dreaming of the 2012 BMW M5 with the help of spyshots and company-provided videos of the car flexing its muscle but today, we have our first real look at the new super sedan – and it is just as spectacular as the spyshots and videos suggested.
We had a good idea of the general shape of the 2012 BMW M5 but these new pictures expose every bit of detail with the new M5. Along the front end, the M5 sports the proud, almost angry countenance with massive air intake ducts running along the lower fascia. The sharp lines of the hood all run to the familiar dual opening grille and if you look carefully, you can see the intercooler tucked away in the middle fascia opening.
Along the side of the new BMW super sedan, the illuminated fender vents sport the subtle M5 logo and the 20” wheels wrapped in high performance tires barely conceal the monstrous M5 braking system with drilled rotors and M5-branded calipers. Out back, the 2012 M5 features four large, polished exhaust tips surrounded by the aggressive rear fascia with a large center splitter area. Finally, the M5 logo is found on the aero-friendly trunk lid, flanking the roundel.
Inside, the 2012 BMW M5 packs all of the luxury and amenities that you would expect from the modern BMW M lineup with a large center screen offering controls of the interior features. The few images offered of the interior of the 2012 M5 show a striking two-tone layout with a dark upper area with light leather seating surfaces echoed along the lower lines of the interior – with black accents throughout.
BMW didn’t make vast changes between the modern 5-Series and the 2012 M5 on the inside or outside, as the M5 seperates itself from the vehicles that share the platform with what is under the hood. The 507 horsepower V10 of the previous M5 has been removed to favor of a new twin turbocharged V8 – offering 552 horsepower and a whopping 501lb-ft of torque (the V10 produced just 383lb-ft). This power is sent to the rear wheels via a dual clutch automatic transmission but we could get a proper manual transmission when the M5 makes it to the US market. This dual clutch setup allows the M5 to rip from a stop to 60 miles per hour in just 4.4 seconds so while there is no mistaking that this is a modern high end luxury car, it is all about high performance.
