The 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 has been shown off all over the country but when it made its Detroit Auto Show debut this past Monday, Ford had a unique way to show off this new high-performance Mustang in action – right in the middle of Cobo Hall.
While it might seem outrageous to consider someone racing through the crowded Detroit Auto Show in a 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302, what better way to show off how awesome the new Boss is than letting the crowd hear a professional driver bang through gears; accelerating well past 100mph. To make the exhibition a bit safer, Ford had the orange and black 2012 Boss 302 strapped down to a Dynojet brand dynamometer; allowing the Ford test driver to perform a sort of virtual quarter mile pass in the warm confines of the Detroit Auto Show.
Ford originally offered this live action Mustang Boss 302 display at the LA Auto Show complete with a drag strip “Christmas tree” to complete the race track feel but at the Detroit Auto Show, Ford took the display one step further as they offered show-goers a chance to go along for a ride in this stationary Boss Mustang. All you had to do was play the Boss 302 slot car road race game set up next to the dyno area and if you were the winner of the four competitors, your next stop was the passenger seat of the new Boss Mustang.
While in Los Angeles, I had a chance to watch a few of these dyno drag strip runs and while they were running the Boss 302 a little harder (based on the sound of the exhaust), one of the guys running the display said that the simulated track runs were putting the new Boss in the 12.4 second range. At the Detroit Auto Show, the run that I recorded sounded like the test driver wasn’t quite at wide open throttle but it still drew a massive crowd – giving everyone in the building a good example of how great the new Boss 302 cubic inch engine sounds under acceleration.
