While most Americans had their eyes focused on the New York or Dearborn debut of the 2015 Ford Mustang Coupe this morning, Australian pony car lovers were introduced to the 2015 Mustang Convertible which - like so many sporty droptops - looks a little funky with the top up while looking just as awesome as the coupe with the top folded away.
The 2015 Ford Mustang was designed to be a globally sold performance car so it came as no huge surprise that Ford Motor Company held debut events around the globe but what did come as a surprise is the fact that Ford introduced the 2015 Mustang Convertible at the Australian event without so much as a mention of it at the big debut in near the Ford headquarters in Dearborn Michigan.
Fortunately, Ford has offered up some images of the next generation Mustang Convertible that reveal the new droptop from every angle and in these, we see that the new Mustang suffers from the same problem as many other sporty convertibles. When the cloth top is in the upright and locked position, it looks a little funky. Not funky in the grand scheme of things but funky compared to the beautifully smooth lines of the 2015 Mustang coupe. I believe that the same is true of the current Mustang Convertibles as well as the 4th and 5th generation Chevrolet Camaro Convertibles so this isnt a problem with the 2015 Mustang Convertible as much as it is a problem (in my eyes, of course) with modern convertibles as a group.
The good news is that with the top dropped, the 2015 Ford Mustang Convertible is just as striking as the new Mustang coupe. The high rear quarter panels give all of the new Mustangs the look of an animal that is crouched up to strike but without the roof in place, that look is magnified to a lovely degree. One interesting aspect is the area where the top disappears under the body of the new Mustang. Much like some European convertibles, there is an elevated point that helps give the car a sportier, angular stance where some convertibles that have just a large, flat surface behind the rear seats end up looking – well – very flat and uninspired in the back. This Mustang Convertible has more character in its back end than any version before it thanks to that raised trunk lid and the stunning rear face of the new American muscle car.
Best of all, the 2015 Ford Mustang Convertible has all of the other design cues that make the 2015 Mustang coupe so attractive including the aggressive front fascia that features the Evos design language, the more heavily sculpted hood and the long front end that gives this pony car the look and feel of a touring car. These images also give us a chance to see the 6th generation Mustang in a color other than Race Red but were I buying one right away, I would have a hard time NOT picking the gorgeous bright red in which the Mustang debuted.
I am not a convertible guy and while I certainly wouldn’t turn down a 2015 Ford Mustang Convertible, I love the rooline and fastback design of the coupe too much to pass it up. However, I know that there are plenty of people out there who insist on having a convertible and if you are among those people, the 2015 Mustang Convertible offers all of the cutting edge technology and new styling of the 2015 Mustang coupe with the freedom of an electronic retracting cloth top. The convertible will likely share all of the drivetrain options with the coupe...but we will have to wait for official word on that.
