The 2015 Ford Mustang has made big waves in the American auto industry since being introduced with its striking new exterior design but the controversy over the shape of the S550 Mustang headlights didn’t stop some devout Mustang fan from laying down an incredible $300,000 for the right to own the very first 2015 Mustang GT built.
The 2015 Ford Mustang was designed to compete on a global level and although the vast majority of the S550 Mustang is very similar to the current 2014 Mustang, the redesigned front end sporting a heavy dose of the Evos styling language that is also featured on the new Ford Fusion has drawn some harsh criticism from those folks who expected that the Mustang would forever look like the current (2104) models from front to back. Those self-appointed industry experts insist that the design of the 2015 Ford Mustang will hurt the sales numbers of the fabled pony car but the results of the Barrett Jackson auction for 2015 Mustang GT #1 indicated otherwise as a handful of bidders battled it out for the rights to buy the first ever S550 Mustang.
When the 2015 Ford Mustang arrives in showrooms later this year, we can expect that the least expensive V8-powered Mustang GT coupes will carry a price in the area of (roughly) $30,000 but the buyer of the first new Mustang built was willing to pay a whopping $300,000. While the 2015 Ford Mustang GT that rolled onto the auction block was finished in the gorgeous Deep Impact Blue, the buyer (whose name has not been announced) will get to configure the first 2015 Ford Mustang GT exactly how he or she wants including exterior color, interior color, stripe packages and the various option packages. Even if Ford allows the buyer of 2015 Mustang #1 to pick every possible option and the price rises above $40,000 – the owner will have still paid better than 7 times the MSRP of the new Mustang GT for the right to own the first unit built for public sale. You can watch the 2015 Mustang auction action in the video at the end of this article.
Ford hasn't offered a clear idea on just how detailed the winner of the Barrett Jackson auction can get when selecting the options for their 2015 Mustang but considering that this individual was willing to pay $300,000 for a Mustang GT – I would guess that FoMoCo is going to be pretty open to the owner of 2015 Mustang #001 picking some items from the option list. If nothing else, I would think that $300k would at least get you a Mustang GT Premium with all of the high tech amenities inside and out. The buyer will also get to pick between the manual or automatic transmission that will be fitted up to the standard 5.0L V8 of the GT package with “at least” 420 horsepower and 396lb-ft of torque. The auction does specify that the winner of the auction gets the first 2015 Mustang fastback- which leaves the door open for another charity auction opportunity for the first 2015 Mustang Convertible.
The entirely of the proceeds from the Barrett Jackson auction for the first 2015 Ford Mustang built (production models – not counting the various pre-production models used for auto shows and the auction itself) are being contributed to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. This means that $300,000 will go towards research in treating diabetic issues in treatment but realistically, the efforts by the JDRF effectively benefit everyone who has the disease as breakthroughs help both children and adults who face the risks of diabetes every day.
I look forward to the Mach 1
I look forward to the Mach 1 powered by the 5.8 liter 662 hp powerplant. Its unfortunate Ford didn't lighten the mustang down to 3400 lbs to make it a low 3 second machine. I hope the 2016 SRT Avenger coupe powered by the hellcat 6.2 liter 600 plus hp torque engine is on the Fiat 3400 lb platform. Pricing on both should be around $75k fully optioned.
