Later last night I saw what I believe to be a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro SS near the General Motors Proving Grounds and when the driver climbed into the throttle as he or she sped away, it sounded pretty healthy – very much like the C7 Corvette Stingray which pulled out behind it and quickly climbed to speed as well.
Last night while getting gas at the corner of GM Road and Milford Road, I saw a newer Chevrolet Corvette Stingray driving from the direction of the Milford Proving Grounds followed by a camouflaged vehicle that was very obviously a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro test mule.
A Little Window into GM’s Private World
Living in Milford, it is very, very common to see camouflaged GM test cars and when getting gas at the closest major intersection in Milford – one which leads to Interstate 96 – you can’t spend much time at the pump without seeing at least one test vehicle headed to or from the Milford Proving Grounds. It is also very common to see sporty GM test cars moving around in the dark and if you are lucky, you will get to hear some of these cars clear their throat as they climb the small hill towards the highway. In the past, for instance, I have seen a heavily camouflaged C7 Corvette blast up the road late one night with the mysterious whine… one that I believe belonged to the supercharged of the Z06 LT4 engine.

Last night I was privy to one of the more interesting sightings after dark, as a pair of C7 Chevrolet Corvette Coupes came from the direction of the Milford Proving Grounds with a couple other cars between them. One car was very difficult to make out based on the headlights, but as it got close to the intersection, I could see from the light of the Marathon station that it was a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro test mule with mesh coverings over the front end. The lead Corvette was the first to turn up the hill and it continued along relatively quietly, but the Camaro mule did not. The driver turned onto Milford Road and climbed into the throttle and it sounded great. I’m not talking about a crazy drag racing launch, but he got into it enough to let the engine clear its throat and it did so with a very healthy roar.
A few cars back was another Corvette Stingray and when that driver pulled out, he or she accelerated in the same manner as the Camaro test car and, not surprisingly, the production Corvette sounded very much like the Camaro.

Through the dark, I really couldn’t tell much about the mystery muscle car, but even with the camo there was no question that this was a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. The sound of this Camaro under power instantly led me to believe that this particular Camaro test car was a new SS model powered by the same LT1 V8 that motivates the C7 Corvette Stingray.

Now, I should point out that this was a test car driving from General Motors’ key testing facility so there is a chance that the car under the camo was indeed a next generation, 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. However, I have no doubt in my mind that it was a Camaro, I have no doubt that it was a V8 and at this point, why would GM still have test mules of the 5th generation Camaro or a 6th gen Camaro using any other engine? I am all but certain that this vehicle was the 2016 Camaro SS with some sort of performance exhaust setup.

Thanks for the excellent write-up, but these are verification prototypes, not test mules. Prototypes are actual test versions of intended model's design, while test mules can be anything used to test components.
