When the newest supercar from British sports car building TVR hits the market for 2017, it will be powered by the same 5.0L V8 that is under the hood of every new Ford Mustang GT – except the 5.0L mill in the new TVR will pack a few extra ponies courtesy of the folks at Cosworth.
While the British coachbuilder TVR hasn’t sold a new car in almost a decade, the brand will be reborn when their new T37 supercar arrives for the 2017 model year. Details are still very limited, but it has been announced that when the new TVR supercar hits the street, it will depart from the inline-6 “Speed Six” engine that the company has used for the previous decade of their vehicles – instead turning to the Coyote 5.0L V8 from the Ford Mustang GT.
This move might upset some TVR and British supercar purists, but it will allow the company to inject a great deal more performance from the T37 with some additional tuning help form the engine gurus at Cosworth. As a result, the new TVR should be considerably more powerful than the 2006 Sagaris.
A New Generation of TVR Engines
When the 2017 TVR T37 arrives with the Mustang’s 5.0 V8, it will be the first car from the British automaker since the 2003 Cerbera, with their other vehicles from that era and the few years following – including the T440R, the Tamora, the T350, the Tuscan, the Typhon and the Sagaris – all coming with their inline-6 Speed Six engine. The Speed Six offered as much as 405 horsepower while the Speed Eight in the Cerbera offered 440hp in its most powerful iteration.
These engines made the TVR supercars stunning performers, but with the steady rise in supercar power levels – the British company needed to big with their new T37. The solution was to contract with Ford Motor Company to use the Coyote V8 in the 2015 Mustang GT, but that engine “only” offers 435 horsepower. To address that matter, TVR is working with the performance engine experts at Cosworth to bump up the output. There is no official word thus far, but rumors suggest that the T37 will have somewhere in the area of 500 horsepower in naturally aspirated form.
In addition to basic tuning changes, the Mustang GT 5.0 V8 is expected to get a dry sump oiling system and exhaust manifolds to better accommodate the side pipe exhaust design of the new TVR supercar.
TVR Racing Program
Best of all, the TVR T37 will allegedly be offered as both a road car and a new LeMans racer, with the Ford Mustang V8 providing the motivation for all variants of the new supercar – although the output will almost surely vary from model to model. Some rumors suggest that the road car could have as much as 550-600 horsepower, but the output of the racing version will depend on the regulations for the given racing class.
However, regardless of the output, nothing is a clearer sign of the Mustang GT’s V8 engine being a world class mill like automakers in other countries using it in their new supercar.
