Ford has shown us the 2015 Ford Mustang and they have shown us the 2.3L EcoBoost engine on a stand at the various auto shows, but we haven’t gotten a very good look at the engine bay of the EcoBoost’d 2015 Mustang – until now.
While at a recent 2015 Ford Mustang media event, we had a chance to check out a new Convertible which happened to be powered by the new 2.3L EcoBoost 4-cylinder mill. We have previously checked out the engine bay of the EcoBoost 2015 Mustang in a short video from the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but the company didn’t show off the engine bay so that brief YouTube video was all that we had.
However, my chance to check out the features of the 2015 Mustang Convertible also provided me with my first chance to check out the EcoBoost engine in the next generation pony car.
Now it should be pointed out that the 2015 Ford Mustang Convertible in these pictures is a very early preproduction model so things very well may change before these turbocharged Mustangs begin hitting dealerships later this year. Ford Motor Company could certainly dress up the EcoBoost before the first units are shipped to owners – perhaps introducing an upcharge option package that pretties-up the engine bay of the EcoBoost’d Mustang – or this could be what we will see when this 2.3L EcoBoost engine begins arriving under the hood of 2015 Mustangs around the country.
In any case, this was our first chance to get a good look at the EcoBoost in the engine bay of the 2015 Mustang so these are likely your first chance to see the engine in place as well.
The underhood design is a bit more subtle and subdued than the big brother 5.0L V8 that will power the 2015 Ford Mustang GT. There is a very mild black engine cover with the EcoBoost emblem stamped into the side back towards the firewall. The turbocharger is found low on the passenger’s side of the engine bay with the charge piping running forward to the intercooler.
As you can see in the image below, there is a whole lot of space on the turbo side of the engine. Plenty of room for a much bigger turbo… just sayin’. Like the 5.0L, the power comes in on the driver’s side through a standard cold air intake setup that pulls the air across the front of the engine and down to where the turbo compresses it before shipping it through the intercooler and then up into the engine. Really, there is a tons of space in the engine bay around the 2015 EcoBoost Mustang engine and I would expect that to lead to great things when people begins modifying these cars in the aftermarket world.
The 2015 Ford Mustang with the new EcoBoost engine definitely isnt the prettiest engine in the world but it will be the most efficient muscle car engine in the world. As for the pretty part – I fully expect to see owners taking that EcoBoost engine cover off and making it as attractive as they want. In the meantime, click any of the thumbnails above for a closer look at the 2.3L EcoBoost 4-cylinder in the engine bay of the 2015 Mustang.
