General Motors announced today that the popular Chevrolet Trailblazer will return for the 2013 model year with the new SUV based on the global platform of the new Chevrolet Colorado mid-sized pickup.
The new Chevrolet Colorado is being built in Thailand so not surprisingly, the 2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer will initially go on sale in 2012 in the Thai market. When the new Brazilian-designed and Thailand-built Colorado was unveiled earlier this year, there was speculation that it would not be offered in the US as both Ford Motor Company and Chrysler have ended the production of their current mid-sized pickups but that speculation was recently nixed when GM announced that the new Colorado would indeed be sold in the United States. Based on the fact that the Colorado will be available in the US, we can expect that the new Chevrolet Trailblazer will be available here as well although GM hasn’t stated that – nor have they stated when it might arrive stateside.
General Motors hasn’t offered much information on the 2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer but they did issue the subtle teaser shown on the right. It doesn’t show very much of the new “Blazer” but it does give us a glimpse of the bulging wheel openings that look to give the SUV a muscular stance – giving the Trailblazer a look more of an SUV than a crossover. Across the back, the Chevy Bowtie is highlighted along with the taillights that look unlike anything that we have seen on current Chevrolet sport utility vehicles.
It will be interesting to see how popular the new Chevrolet Trailblazer and Colorado are in the US market as building them and shipping them from Thailand to the US could get costly if sales volume gets high enough. Needless to say, if GM moves production of US-sold new Colorado pickups or Trailblazer SUBs into the country we can expect to see both vehicles on that platform built in the US. The sales of the current Colorado and GMC Canyon were barely enough to keep the production facility busy but the addition of a new Chevy Trailblazer could warrant enough production units to have the new truck and SUV built in the USA.
The 2013 Chevrolet Trailblazer is set to make its global debut in Dubai on November 10th which means that we very well could see it at the LA Auto Show starting on November 16th for the media and if not there; perhaps GM will show it off at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit’s Cobo Hall.
