The newest batch of teaser images of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro were introduced today on the CamaroSix website, this time showing us what appears to be the front brake setup of the new Camaro SS and a set of sharp looking wheels that I would suspect are also part of the SS package.
So far, General Motors has shown off a handful of images of 2016 Camaro components, including the skeleton of the dash, the new exhaust manifolds for the LT1 V8, the chassis and some suspension components, but the newest pair of teasers gives us a better idea of what the 6th gen Camaro will look like on the outside. Interestingly, today’s press release accompanying the images of the 2016 Camaro brakes and wheels doesn’t really relate to the brakes and wheels, but it does offer some key information on the new GM muscle car.
Stronger, Lighter, More Responsive
The newest statement from GM on the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro includes the description of Stronger, Lighter and More Responsive in the title, offering some new details on the chassis of the 6th gen F-body. Before ever building a prototype test car, the GM engineering team spent more than 9 million hours working with computer models, making the car as good as they could in the virtual world before attempting to build the next gen Camaro in the real world. This intensive modeling process resulted in a chassis that is 28% stiffer while also being lighter than the outgoing models. A stiffer chassis improves handling and ride quality, while also allowing the engineers to more accurately tune the suspension and steering systems without concerns of chassis flex.
“The modeling abilities of computer aided engineering are advancing at incredible rates,” said Jim Karlavage, Camaro program engineering manager. “Today, we can accurately model opportunities to add torsional strength without adding unnecessary mass. The result is a lighter, stiffer structure that benefits every aspect of the driving experience.”
The Wheels and Brakes
The images accompanying today’s statement show a very nicely styled set of wheels wrapped in Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, which I would guess are either Camaro SS wheels or optional wheels for the Camaro LT, such as an RS package wheel. Unfortunately, the tires are shadowed perfectly to prevent us from seeing what size these wheels are, but they look like a 20 inch wheel to me – and a very good looking one.
The brake caliper and rotor are from Brembo, and this high performance brake system looks very similar to what is found on the current Camaro SS, so I would expect that this setup will also be found on the 2016 Camaro SS. It looks very much like the current brake setup, but I imagine that it has been improved in some way, even if it is something as simple as a slight weight reduction in the braking assembly.
The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro will meet the world on May 16th in Detroit, but we can expect more teasers from the automaker on April 20th, April 30th and May 11th.
