Gumpert has announced that they will introduce the second vehicle in their lineup when the new Tornante debuts in March at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.
The new Gumpert Tornante has been designed by Italian supercar designer Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera and it will take the form of a 2-seat Fast Tourer, offering more room and comfort than the Gumpert Apollo without departing from the German supercar maker’s vehicle philosophy. The Tornante will feature a V8 mounted centrally in the carbon fiber monocoque all wrapped up in composite body panels, so it will offer plenty of power in a lightweight chassis to fulfill its requirements to get the supercar designation but we can expect the new Gumpert to lean more towards the luxury end of the spectrum.
For those unfamiliar with the term “Tourer”, this typically refers to a vehicle intended more for a comfortable drive over long distances. These are vehicles well equipped for a high speed run across Europe or the US but over time, Tourers have evolved into vehicles that are just as comfortable on a tight road course. Based on the description in the brief press release, I would expect something along the lines of the Aston Martin Vantage but based on the exclusivity and high price of the Apollo, this car may cost a great deal more – hopefully offering performance to go along with the big price.
Unfortunately, the announcement of the new Gumpert Tornante came with no images of the new Tourer but with the start of the Geneva Motor Show just over a month away, we should soon know what the future holds for the Gumpert brand. I have had a chance to check out a Gumpert Apollo at the 2010 SEMA Show (shown above) thanks to the folks at Evolution Motorsports – the sole importer of the German supercars into the US. While some people criticize the look of the Apollo, I personally love the unusual, sharp styling of the sleek sports car and the performance is rivaled by few vehicles in the world. The Tornante has big shoes to fill as it enters the Gumpert lineup but if the Apollo is any indication of what is to come, the world could meet the next great supercar at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show.
