General Motors’ Austrailian Holden brand has introduced their new Series II Cruze and while it looks a great deal like the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, the Holden version offers more interior goodies and drivetrain options.
The American-issued Chevy Cruze starts with a 1.8L 4-cylinder in the base model with the 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder being used in the majority of US Cruze models. The Holden Series II Cruze also begins with the naturally aspirated 1.8L and the turbo 1.4L engine has been added to the Aussie lineup but unlike the US models, the Holden Cruze also gets a powerful 2.0L turbo diesel option. All of these engine options come with a standard manual transmission with an optional automatic transmission offering improved fuel economy across the board.
The Holden Series II Cruze begins with the CD and CDX models, both of which come with standard with the 1.8L naturally aspirated engine, offering 140 horsepower and 130lb-ft of torque. This engine is mated to the standard 5-speed manual transmission or the economy minded 6-speed automatic. If you want more power and better fuel economy in your Cruze CD or CDX, the 2.0L turbocharged diesel offers 161 horsepower and 265lb-ft of torque while offering the best fuel economy in the lineup (around 42mpg). The new 1.4L turbocharged gas engine is also an option for new Holden Series II Cruze CD models, offering more torque than the 1.8L engine and better fuel economy.
The new trimlines for the Holden Series II Cruze are the sporty SRi and SRi-V models, which both include some exterior changes to give the compact sedan a more aggressive look. A stylish front fascia sports some sharp yet subtle touch-ups to enhance the sporty feel and additional badging announces the new trimline along the side of the car. If you want a loaded up interior, the Cruze SRi-V comes with a high end infotainment system with a massive touchscreen and a hard drive that will hold around 2000 of your favorite songs. These two sport minded trimlines both come standard with the new 1.4L turbocharged gas engine offering 138 horsepower and 148lb-ft of torque.
The Holden lineup won’t show up anytime soon in the US but as companies like BMW begin to test the American market’s desire for diesel powered cars, perhaps we will also get our hands on the powerful diesel Cruze in the near future as modern diesel technology works to do away with the negative perception of oil-burners in the States.
