Yesterday we looked at a handful of design sketches of the 2015 Ford Mustang and today we have a video featuring two of the men who were heavily involved with the design of the S550 Mustang – offering an even better glimpse into the inspiration behind the new look of the Mighty Mustang.
The 2015 Ford Mustang design sketches that we featured yesterday were “signed” by Mustang Exterior Design Manager Kemal Curic and he joins Ford Exterior Design Director Joel Piaskowski in this video to walk us through the key aspects of the S550 Mustang exterior design. Both Curic and Piaskowski touch on many of the design aspects which were highlighted in yesterday’s concept sketches but this three minute video offers a much more elaborate look at the key design features including the new front end, the rear end and the side lines of the sexy new Mustang.
One aspect of this new 2015 Mustang design video that I really enjoy is seeing the various concept drawings that show features which did not make it to the production version of the S550. This video starts off showing a large collection of “ideation sketches” of the 2015 Mustang from all sides and I find this particularly interesting now that I know what the 2015 models look like as we can see what features Ford opted to avoid. For instance, one rendering shows a very similar front end to that seen on the 2015 Mustang but the concept drawing features large grille-mounted fog lights similar to what we know from the 2014 Mustang GT. This first short segment also shows a bunch of Mustang concept drawings that were far more aggressively designed – especially in the back end and how the roof flows down to the back end.
This video is best watched in full screen so that you can get the best look possible at all of the different looks of the 2015 Ford Mustang during the development stages. Who knows – some of the exterior design features which did not make it to the standard 2015 Mustang in V6, EcoBoost or GT form could show up on a future package. Some of the features which I would expect to arrive on the next generation Boss, Mach 1 or even the higher performance Shelby/SVT models include the front fascia “vent” that appears in so many of the design drawings along with some of the non-production hood designs that we see throughout the video. The front fascia vent in question is shown regularly in the video and you can see it on the left side of Kemal Curic in the video screenshot above. That 2015 Mustang drawing (which looks remarkably similar to the production model) has a more aggressive chin spoiler and that subtle fascia vent – features which I believe could appear on the rumored GT350 Mustang.
Perhaps when the 2016 Mustang GT350 debuts, we will see some of the features shown in this video on a production model but in the meantime, this video focuses on the features that make the 2015 Mustang so handsome. Even if nothing from this video proves to reveal aspects of a future Mustang model, this video really offers the best look yet at the new Mustang design process from the early concept stages through to the production model that so many people love…and so many people don’t love.
