Today in General Motors’ Oshawa Assembly Plant in Canada, production of the new 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible began and NASCAR legends Rick Hendrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr. were on hand for the momentous occasion.
Like all modern (5th generation) Chevrolet Camaros, the 2011 Camaro Convertible will be built in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada and other than a sunroof, the droptop Camaro is available with all of the same options and features as the popular Chevrolet Camaro Coupe. This includes the 312 horsepower 3.6L V6, the 400hp L99 V8 in the automatic (transmission) Camaro SS and the 426hp LS3 found in the manually shifted Camaro SS.
Rick Hendrick was the owner of the very first 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe and accordingly, he is the first person who will receive a production version of the 2011 Camaro Convertible. Hendrick won the rights to both the first consumer-issued 5th Generation Camaro Coupe and Convertible at Barrett-Jackson Auto Auction as he paid big money that not only got him these “first” vehicles – but that money also made for a massive contribution to various charities. Mr. Hendrick had this to say about the beginning of production of the 2011 Camaro Convertible:
“I grew up loving the Chevrolet brand, and I’ve never raced anything else. As a Chevy enthusiast, it’s been exciting to see the Camaro return as such a world-class, high-performance car. The folks in Oshawa make some of the best products on the road, so the opportunity to meet them and thank them for what they do is a real privilege.”
Dale Earnhardt Jr. (or simply, Dale Jr. as he is better known around the racing world) is best known for being the son of the late racing legend Dale Earnhardt Sr. but both father and son realized their racing success behind the wheel of Chevrolet products. Dale Jr. is the proud owner of a beautifully restored 1972 Chevrolet Camaro and plans to purchase one of the new 2011 Camaro Convertibles when they become available later this year.
The 2011 Chevrolet Camaro Convertible pricing begins at $30,000 for a droptop Camaro powered by the 3.6L V6 engine and if you want the big power of the new Camaro SS, a 2011 Convertible starts around $37,500 (both prices include destination fees). General Motors expects that the 2011 Camaro Convertible will begin reaching US dealerships in late February.
