General Motors announced earlier this week that their small cars will have a major presence at the 2011 SEMA Show but the bread and butter of GM’s performance history is their V8 powered performance cars – some of which we get a preview of today in the form of the four Chevrolet Camaro models below.
While Ford Motor Company opts to show off modified vehicles with help from aftermarket customization companies, General Motors relies on components from their Performance Parts division (GMPP) along with items from other models in their lineup like the new Camaro ZL1. GM will bring out at least the four Camaros detailed below, all of which have significant exterior modifications and varying levels of performance modifications with both the hard-topped coupe and the droptop convertible getting some SEMA Show love.
Camaro Red Zone Convertible Concept – This Camaro Convertible is designed to feature a variety of GM accessories including 21x8.5-inch polished-face wheels, a body-color grille, a convertible wind screen, and an officially licensed suspension package designed by Pedders. Next, this dressed up Camaro Convertible wears the Crystal Claret exterior color that is new for 2012 accessorized with a silver heritage stripe that will arrive in the catalog later this year along with “concept” components including a polished strut tower brace and an RS underhood liner. Inside, the Camaro Red Zone Convertible Concept gets a titanium leather layout with Silver Ice accents that are echoed into the door and instrument panel and some Camaro logo floormats finish off this simple package. “This is a Camaro for those who want great looks and a performance personality,” said designer Adam Barry. “It’s a simple yet dramatic statement that is uniquely Camaro.” A rendering of this Camaro is available in the gallery on the right.
Camaro Synergy Series Concept – The Synergy Camaro first debuted at SEMA a few years ago and while that bright green concept has lead to an incredibly popular exterior color choice, the 2011 SEMA Show will bring us the new Synergy Series Concept Camaro that has nothing to do with the color green. Finished in silver with red accents and heavily clad in Chevrolet accessories, GM states that depending on the reception of this package we could see this become a new production model in the future. This package begins with a Camaro SS painted Silver Ice with black “synergy stripes” on the hood while there will be more unique decals on the decklid and the SS or RS badges have been removed. Next, Chevrolet Accessories include a ground effects package, a unique grille, black/red 21” wheels, the GM-approved Pedders suspension package, red Brembo brake calipers, a red engine cover, and a concept (not currently available) underhood liner with the SS logo and a polished strut tower brace. Inside, the Camaro Synergy Series Concept gets a set of Chevrolet Accessories floor mats with the Camaro logo, a red interior lighting package, a Hurst short throw shifter, and a black leather interior layout with red accent stitching all over the place. This package also adds a set of race-inspired pedals and the SS logo on the head rests of the leather bucket seats.
Camaro 1LE Concept (shown on the right) – This is where things really begin to get exciting as the 1LE Concept is designed to be a serious track terror with components from both the current Camaro SS and the upcoming Camaro ZL1, along with a handful of goodies from the accessories catalog. This package begins with a Camaro SS Coupe in Victory Red with a flat black hood, front splitter, side sills, rear spoiler, side view mirrors and hashmarks on the driver’s side front fender. The exterior upgrades to the 1LE Concept package includes lightweight 20x10 inch up front and 20x11 inch rear rims, all of which are finished in satin black and wrapped in the same Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G asymmetrical tires that are found on the Camaro ZL1. Next, the drivetrain of the Camaro SS undergoes a significant series of modifications with help from the ZL1 including the Magnetic Selective Ride Control system, sport tuned electric power steering, a six-speed manual close-ratio transmission, Brembo six-piston front calipers, with two-piece front rotors, and four-piston rear calipers over standard rotors – all of which help this Camaro SS to be an ultimate track car. Finishing off the performance modifications is a new dual exhaust outlets with an active exhaust and diffuser setup borrowed from the ZL1. Inside, the Camaro 1LE Concept includes black leather with Graphite Silver trim, a ZL1 shifter, the ZL1 flat bottomed steering wheel and a Chevrolet Accessories pedal kit. “The Camaro 1LE concept is all about the track,” said Al Oppenheiser, chief engineer for the Camaro. “It’s an all-out race car package that pays tribute to that special option from the past.” A rendering of this Camaro is available in the gallery on the right.
Camaro ZL1 Carbon Concept – Last but certainly not least is the awesome new Camaro ZL1 Carbon Concept, based on the incredible new ZL1 but emphasizing the dark side GM performance. This package is predominantly an appearance package but GM also adds a few items that can help cut weight and improve performance. This ZL1 Carbon Concept begins with a Camaro ZL1 finished in the new Ashen Gray exterior color (available for 2012) with carbon fiber accents on the hood, rear spoiler and throughout the interior with Jet Black interior leather with Torch Red stitch work. GMPP then adds a set of lightweight 20x10 inch front wheels and 20x11 inch wheels finished in satin black with bright machined faces; all hiding away the high performance Brembo braking package with six-piston front calipers and four-piston rear calipers. “This concept’s dramatic appearance matches the extreme performance capabilities of the Camaro ZL1,” said Tony Roma, program engineering manager for the Camaro ZL1. “And even if its styling doesn’t intimidate you, its performance on the track will.” A rendering of this Camaro is available in the gallery on the right.
