Late last week a bright red Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat hit the track at Cecil County Dragway and when the day was over, this blower-only 4-door sedan had claimed the title as the quickest Hellcat Charger in the world – marking the first time that one of the supercharged Chargers got into the 9 second barrier while obviously setting the record for the quickest Hellcat sedan in the world.
Over the past few months, we have featured a few videos showing Hellcat Challengers cracking into the 9 second quarter mile range and with the cool weather blanketing the east coast, we are seeing new record times – including the first Hellcat Charger to run a 9-second quarter mile.
Hellcat Charger in the 9s
While I am surprised that it took someone “this long” to get the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat into the 9 second quarter mile range, it has been a few weeks since we talked about a Hellcat car running in the 9s. Back in mid-September, a pair of Hellcat Challengers broke into the 9s on the same day, with one Challenger in Texas running a 9.94 while a second in Maryland ran a 9.775 later that night. (Click here for a closer look at those two historic runs) The Hellcat Challenger that ran the 9.775 run in September was built by High Horse Performance and it is no coincidence that HHP was responsible for the build of the first Hellcat Charger to crank into the 9s.
The big news here is that unlike the Hellcat Challengers running in the 9s back in September, this Hellcat Charger isn’t running any nitrous oxide. The bright red Hellcat Charger has a new upper pulley that lifts the peak boost to 18psi, an ATI lower pulley, catless mid pipes, a 3.09 rear end gear set, a heavy duty driveshaft from the Driveshaft Shop and a Diablosport CMR tune by High Horse Performance and HEMITUNER Performance. The result of these modifications are 902 horsepower and 866lb-ft of torque – enough to hurdle this full size sedan down the quarter mile on a cool day well into the 9 second range with the help of some lightweight wheels wrapped in sticky tires.
First into the 9s, Nearly a Hellcat Record
The video below shows three quarter mile romps by the world’s quickest Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. On the first run, the Hellcat driven and owned by Linda blasted down the quarter mile in just 9.901 seconds and with a speed of 138.7 miles per hour – making this the first Hellcat Charger to run in the 9s. On the second run, Linda gets away from the line a little harder and picks up some speed through the top end, running a 9.732 at 140.23 miles per hour. Finally, on the last run, Linda squeezes a little more out of her supercharged Mopar super-sedan, running a 9.710 at 140.39 miles per hour.
According to the information in the video details, the current Hellcat quarter mile record is a 9.70, so Linda’s sedan is within a blink of an eye from being the quickest Hellcat car in the world. For now, she will have to settle for being the quickest Hellcat Charger in the world, which is still a mighty impressive title.
