A drunken Canadian driver of a Mazda6 survived even though he crashed into six other vehicles as he crossed several lanes of traffic in the city of Winnipeg on Tuesday. When his car came to a stop, police in Winnipeg arrested him, and later released him. Two people were hurt. All seven drivers survived the mayhem.
The unidentified driver, 58, caused all the commotion Tuesday morning at the intersection of Waverley Street and Bishop Grandin Boulevard, the Winnipeg Free Press reported in today's editions. Ctvwinnipeg.ca reported tonight that the driver had a blood-alcohol level over .08, which means he was driving drunk.
Police told the newspaper the impaired driver took his diamond blue Mazda6 southbound toward Bishop Grandin on Waverley around 9:30 a.m., then hopped a median and first struck a Dodge Dakota truck like the one that recently stopped production in Warren, Mich., and then slammed into five more cars and trucks. Police did not say how fast the Mazda6 was going.
Two drivers had minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital. They are a 50-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man. Three of the damaged vehicles were towed. Four others had minor damage, police told reporters.
The driver of the Mazda6 was released by police. He will be charged with impaired driving at a later date, the newspaper said. CBC News reported that the drunken driver was released from police lockup a few hours after the crashes because he "promised to return to court."
