Gotcha! Mayors eye cams to catch drivers who run red lights, have a need for speed

The nation's mayors will meet in Baltimore June 17-20 to discuss issues of shared importance, including the value of creating natural gas vehicle fleets, how to improve transportation in America and nurturing economic development. One topic sure to capture everyone's attention is a Transportation Committee proposal to consider purchasing cameras whose job will be to catch speeders and people who run red lights.

They also will talk about job creation, national security, immigration and other issues. Communities saving money at the gas pump is also among topics of prime importance at this 79th annual meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa (pictured) will be inaugurated as the new president of the organization on June 20, replacing a mayor from Indiana.

During the conference, these elected officials will share ideas on public policy and seek solutions to pressing problems to bring back to their home communities.

Game day is June 20, when mayors will put their money and their support where their mouth is by debating everything and voting on resolutions that include redirecting war dollars to take care of needs that include buying new vehicles to improve fleet transportation at home.

Other issues of note: Energy Committee and Environmental Committee agenda items support the purchase of electric vehicles. The Workforce Commission will discuss the value of urban manufacturing of vehicles and other things. The Tourism Committee wants to address protection of American jobs in the auto industry and other industries.

Featured speakers include House of Representatives Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, Health and Human Service Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Tom Donohue, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.
