BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has told German automotive magazine Auto Motor und Sport that BMW X4 all-weather sports coupe will fill the gap between the X3 and X6 in 2014.
BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has told German automotive magazine Auto Motor und Sport that it will build a crossover utility vehicle called the X4 that will fill the gap between the X3 and the X6. It will have similar styling to the X6 (the vehicle pictured is a concept rumored to be the basis for the X4), and it will compete with Porsche's upcoming small SUV, the Cajun.
The company has released few other details about the X4 at this time, but we know that it will be the same length as the X3, which puts it about 8 inches shorter than BMW's original SUV, the X5. The X4 is likely to share drivetrains with the X3, and will undoubtedly carry BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. Pricing is also unannounced, and we do not know whether there will be a high-performance M version either.
BMW is adding this vehicle to the lineup based on the success of the X6, which is a four-door sports coupe that sits on a raised off-road suspension. It has been one of BMW's most controversial models as of late. Nonetheless, sales are so strong that they've actually surpassed BMW's original target, so the automaker is confident that the market exists for a smaller, cheaper, and more fuel-efficient off-road sports coupe.
