Toyota is challenging 7 eco-savvy eco-influencers to a contest of fuel efficiency in a Toyota Prius Plug-in.
On Wednesday, Toyota launched the second wave of its Prius Plug-in MPG Challenge. In the contest, seven "prolific environmental influencers" from N.Y., N.J. and Connecticut have been loaned a Prius Plug-in to see who can get the best fuel efficiency score.
The first wave of the contest was launched in May 2013. The winner, Helping Hands Food Pantry, in Teaneck N.J., achieved an average of 356 MPGe* over 506 total miles driven. This is 261 MPGe more than the vehicle’s official estimated average in EV Mode. As a result the Food Pantry will receive a $2,500 contribution.
Participants in the second wave have a 30 day period to prove their stuff, competing against one another for the highest fuel efficiency score. The challengers in the second wave include: Earth Day New York, a nonprofit promoting environmental awareness and solutions; EcoKaren, a chiropractor-turned-green-living-consultant and blogger focused on the environment and health; Green-4-U, a resource for people who want to know more about green living; Green Divas, a radio show and blog on green and sustainable living; Green Living Guy, author and editor of the “Green Guru” series; Inhabitat, a blog devoted to the future of design, tracking the innovations towards a smarter and more sustainable future; and New York Green Advocate, a blog focused around the latest news about the world environment, sustainable living, renewable energy and green building
The Toyota Prius Plug-in is a version of the Toyota Prius where the battery pack is large enough for 12 miles or so of electric driving, and the car can be recharged by plugging in to an EV Charging Station. It is available nationwide, and has a starting MSRP of $32,000.
Wave two challengers will document their activity in real-time via social channels, including:
