When the Nissan Titan debuts in Detroit with its new 550 lb-ft diesel engine, it will feature high power output in no small measure thanks to the innovative new turbine design Cummins has created for the powerplant.
Cummins and Nissan co-developed the new two-stage turbine for the big V8 turbodiesel that will appear in the next-generation Titan pickup truck. The design reduces lag, generates more low-end power, and delivers smoother transitions between low and high RPM. The Rotary Turbine Control shunts exhaust gasses at various levels to optimize emissions or power, depending on need. This is done through four modes of operation.
In High-Pressure mode, the turbine minimizes lag for better response to throttle pressing. With Low-Pressure mode, the first stage is dropped and higher power output is achieved. Wastegate model provides maximum power output as part of the LP mode while Regen model helps reburn exhaust more efficiently in order to boost emissions performance under normal operations.
The 2016 Nissan Titan Diesel will debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit early next year. Full details on the truck's redesign and the new 5.0-liter Cummins that will power it will be unveiled then.
Here at Torque News, we've kept a close eye on the Titan Diesel and its Cummins powerplant with the expectation that this truck will shake up the industry. It will be only the second light-duty diesel pickup truck on the market and the most powerful to-date. We spoke with Nissan about the truck about this time last year and were surprised at the Titan Diesel's intended market. We've also deduced that of all teh truck makers, Chrysler should most fear the Titan Diesel.
