Aside from the added practicality, this is the best looking Miata ever.
Our prediction earlier this month that Mazda would introduce a new hard-top convertible version of the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata has proven correct. However, nobody saw the beautiful fastback design coming. The new MX-5 RF, for retractable fastback, is without a doubt the most visually impressive Miata ever.
Mazda unveiled the new 2017 MX-5 RF at the New York Auto show last night. Like the last-generation Miata PRHT, the MX-5 RF retains its very useful truck space. The simple two-space design reveals that the fastback portion (the sloping rear roofline behind the driver) is actually not fixed to the body itself, but lifts up during the operation of the top.
In addition to the new top, Mazda is planning to offer the new 2017 MX-5 RF in an all-new color. The Machine Gray color is the latest development of the Takuminuri painting technology Mazda originally created for its Soul Red. The paint uses extremely thin, high-brightness aluminum flakes to provide its unique hues. The paint must be applied very precisely to ensure even coating. Mazda has taken what was once only a hand-painted finish and automated it. The resulting effect of the multi-layer process is a heightened contrast between light and shadow.
