Mazda shows off a concept we think may be a new model.
Mazda is bringing two interesting concept designs to the Tokyo Auto Show which runs from Oct. 28 through Nov. 5. Like most Asian automakers, Mazda rarely shows off anything that isn't intended for eventual production, so we like to speculate on that these new designs could preview.
The small teaser image above shows a five-door crossover or hatchback. In the U.S. market, car models are in decline and crossovers on the rise, so we assume the full image will reveal a "high-rider" or crossover design. Looking over Mazda's current lineup, the most obvious place for Mazda to enter a new model is a "CX-4." The CX-3 and CX-5 are both relatively successful models for Mazda, but the company could introduce a longer, lower crossover with more sporty intentions. That's our guess, what's yours?
Mazda will also debut some technology at the show. The long-awaited SKYACTIV-X next-generation gasoline engine which is set to become the world’s first commercial gasoline engine to use compression ignition will be on display as a technology exhibit. It is not yet found in any vehicles.
The Mazda CX-8, a new three-row crossover SUV will debut as the company’s flagship SUV in Japan, it features sophisticated styling and can seat passengers comfortably in all three rows. FInally, a special edition Mazda Roadster (MX-5) Red Top featuring a dark cherry red canopy and auburn Nappa leather interior will be exhibited.
