Toyota, Europe’s second-largest automaker, has achieved a new milestone with electrified vehicles.
Toyota is Europe’s second-largest automaker. The company’s deliveries continue to grow, and electrified vehicles are leading the way. Toyota announced this week that it has achieved a 74% electrification rate in Europe. That means that about three out of four of the vehicles it now delivers in the European market are hybrids, plug-in hybrids, or battery-electric. Battery-electric vehicle growth was particularly strong, increasing by 24 % year-on-year.
Matt Harrison, Chief Corporate Officer, Toyota Motor Europe, offered this statement on Toyota's success: “We are pleased with a record first half-year sales performance, and we continue to outperform the market. We’ve experienced buoyant demand across our electrified vehicle models for hybrids, plug-in hybrids and battery electric vehicles. We’ve also injected newness with the introduction of the all-new Lexus LBX and new C-HR plug-in hybrid which have both been well received. This strong demand for our products is a testament to our multi-path strategy with a line-up that caters to the diversity of our European customers’ needs.”
If Toyota’s growth rate continues for the balance of the year, the company may achieve a total delivery volume of over 1 million electrified vehicles in Europe in calendar 2024. Toyota is on pace now to surpass a total vehicle delivery volume of over 1.3 million units in what it defies as the European market. Coincidentally, Toyota is also on track to deliver a million electrified vehicles in North America in 2024.
Toyota’s largest seller in Europe is the Yaris Cross Hybrid, with just under 100,000 units delivered in the first half of this year. Among Toyota’s Lexus-branded models the NX and RX hybrids are its top sellers.
Toyota Motor Europe’s (TME) market is all Western, Central, and Eastern European countries including Turkey as well as Israel and a number of Central Asian markets (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Kazakhstan). Russia is not part of this market. TME discontinued sales in Russia in 2022.
