Customers looking for high-tech features don’t have to spend a lot to get it in a new car. A recent study from Cars.com ranks the ten best vehicles under $30,000 with safety technology for urban commuters. The 2021 Subaru Outback, Crosstrek, and Legacy are affordable and among the best new vehicles.
Cars.com says commuters should look for “commuter-friendly technology” like advanced driver assistance systems with adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assistance. All three Subaru models come with EyeSight driver assist safety technology with advanced adaptive cruise control and lane centering.

The report ranks the 2021 Subaru Legacy number three best for commuters for its suite of standard driver-assist features and affordable pricing. The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek scores number seven best for its standard EyeSight on all models equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission. The Crosstrek gains advanced adaptive cruise control with lane-centering for the 2021 model year.
The 2021 Subaru Outback scores the number nine best under $30,000 for commuters for its suite of safety features as standard content across all models. Adaptive cruise control with lane-centering down to a stop is included.
The top-10 best cars under $30,000 for commuters from one to ten based on price are the Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra, Subaru Legacy, Hyundai Sonata, Toyota Prius, Toyota C-HR, Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota RAV4, Subaru Outback, and Nissan Rogue.
The Subaru lineup also scores highest in the latest IIHS crash scores, with the 2021 Outback, Crosstrek, and Legacy earning the highest Top Safety Pick+ or Top Safety Pick ratings.
Subaru of America has announced the 2022 Subaru Outback and Legacy models, and they still fall under $30,000. The 2022 Crosstrek will be announced this summer.
What is the price of the 2022 Subaru Outback?
The 2022 Outback comes in eight trim levels; the base trim is priced from $27,845, Premium ($30,270), Limited ($34,720), Touring ($38,620), Onyx Edition XT ($36,270), new for 2022, Outback Wilderness ($38,120), Limited XT ($39,120), and Touring XT ($41,070). Pricing includes $1,125 destination and delivery fees.
What is the price of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek?
The 2021 Crosstrek subcompact SUV comes in five trim levels for customers and gets a small price increase. The base trim is priced from $23,295, Premium ($24,345), all-new Sport ($27,545), and Limited ($29,045). Prices include destination and delivery ($1,050).
What is the price of the 2022 Subaru Legacy?
The 2022 Legacy sedan comes in six trim levels. The 2022 midsize sedan starts at $23,955 for the base trim, Premium ($26,205), Sport ($29,750), Limited ($30,905), Limited XT ($35,455), and Touring XT ($37,155). Destination and delivery fees are included in the pricing above.
