The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness is more than an appearance package. Check out the details here.
Subaru of America announced the all-new 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness today, and it’s ready for serious fun in the dirt. The Outback Wilderness is more than an appearance package and comes with off-road upgrades not found on the standard model. The adventure-ready upgrades include an advanced dual function X-Mode, elevated 9.5-inch ground clearance, standard front skid plate, and an upgraded suspension.
The Outback Wilderness is powered by the 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine coupled with the Lineartronic CVT automatic (Continuously Variable Transmission) with 8-speed manual mode function with steering wheel paddle shifters. The CVT was modified to achieve an equivalent final drive ratio at the front wheels. The rear differential also gets upgraded with a final drive ratio of 4.44:1.
Subaru says the combination of the rear differential and CVT modification improves available low-end torque at the wheels, resulting in a superior ability to climb grades up to 40 percent on a gravel surface. The new model comes fitted with 17-inch Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires, and a full-size spare tire is included.
The Outback Wilderness will handle more challenging trails with 9.5-inch ground clearance, a nearly one-inch increase over the standard model’s 8.7-inches. Subaru says the suspension is tuned for improved stability, and the front and rear shock absorbers and springs were increased in length to provide additional ground clearance and suspension travel.
Approach angles on the SUV have been extended from 18.6 degrees to 20.0, ramp break-over angle shifts from 19.4 degrees to 21.2 degrees, and the departure angle increases from 21.7 degrees to 23.6 degrees.
The new model gets dual-function X-Mode, and exclusive to Outback Wilderness, a new advanced feature for X-MODE that allows the wagon/SUV to switch automatically from low-speed managed driving to speeds over 25 mph without interruption of power or performance. The X-MODE display also features a new roll-angle indicator to help the driver navigate off-road terrain.
Outside the Outback Wilderness comes with anodized copper-finish accents, new front, rear bumpers, a hexagonal front grille, more prominent wheel arch cladding, and unique hex-designed LED fog lights, and an anti-glare hood decal in matte-black finish. Window trim and exterior badges have a black finish, and Subaru Wilderness badges emblazoned on the front fenders and rear gate. The new Outback trim also debuts its exclusive exterior color: Geyser Blue.
The new Wilderness model also utilizes a fixed ladder-type roof rack system, with a static load limit of 700 lbs., allowing the use of a roof-top tent and additional roof rack accessories. Other upgrades include a front view monitor, LED rear gate light, and hands-free power rear gate.
Inside the Outback Wilderness features StarTex water-repellant material, Subaru Wilderness logo embossed in the headrests, copper-colored contrast stitching, gunmetal grey touchpoint, and brushed aluminum pedals. The new Outback also comes with all-weather floor mats, the rear seatback is wrapped in a waterproof material, and a waterproof rear cargo tray protects the load floor.
Subaru retailers will have additional accessory parts that include aluminum or steel skid plates for the engine, transmission, and fuel tank. A rear differential protector is also available.
