Customers are not waiting for the new 2020 Subaru Outback to arrive. What’s up with the aging Outback?
Most outgoing vehicles lose sales right before the newly redesigned model arrives but not the Subaru Outback. It’s getting stronger at the end of its life cycle. Subaru of America (SOA) reported they delivered a record number of 2019 Outback SUV/Crossovers to customers last month. It was the best June ever for Outback as SOA moved 17,505 units off dealer lots compared with 16,071 in June 2018. Subaru has sold 93,711 year-to-date compared with 90,978 in 2018. The Outback leads the entire Subaru stable of all-wheel-drive vehicles with the popular new Forester still number two with 86,219 total sales through the first 6 months of 2019.
There could be three reasons why customers are not waiting for the all-new 2020 model to arrive and snatching up the aging model. Subaru dealers are offering big incentives for customers to buy the remaining inventory of 2019 Outback SUVs, they could also want the last of the discontinued 3.6R six-cylinder models, or they like the zero percent financing Subaru is offering on the outgoing model. This is happening right before the completely redesigned 2020 Outback arrives later this summer.
The Outback, that’s not really a wagon but an SUV/Crossover is appealing to a wider audience in the U.S. than ever before. The SUV-alternative Outback features excellent cargo capacity, has high ground clearance, and it comes standard with Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system for all-weather capability and for weekend excursions away from civilization.
The Outback isn’t your typical SUV. It comes with 25 years of experience of going through snow, mud, water, giving owners outstanding driving performance in all weather conditions. An active generation of customers found a recreation-purposed vehicle with a “go-anywhere” attitude was more than an SUV. Owners use the Outback for weekend excursions in the mountains to get away from the crowd and offers outstanding utility for carrying recreational gear like kayaks, mountain bikes, and camping equipment because of its functional crossover design.
The aging Outback isn’t slowing down and customers are snatching up record numbers before the all-new 2020 Subaru Outback arrives. The new model is getting plenty of new upgrades but customers aren’t waiting for it to get here.

Maybe customers are waiting
Maybe customers are waiting for Subaru to get the bugs worked out of the new model?!
Amazing how offering 0%
Amazing how offering 0% financing can get buyers to flock like moths to a porch light- even to this "Family truckster."
After leasing a 2014 2.5,
After leasing a 2014 2.5, then a 2016 3.6, my plan was always to wait for the last year of the 3.6 (pretty obvious it was going to get killed at some point soon since there hasn’t been any investment in updating it), then wait until the end of the next year when the 0% financing typically comes in. Then I had to scramble when they killed the dark blue in the Touring model for 2019 (even thought they’ve been using it for the 2019 ads) and I wasn’t paying attention. The dealer couldn’t find any dark blue 3.6 Touring models for a couple months and the ordering window for the 2018s was long since closed. I finally located one halfway across the state (OK, maybe not that far) and snagged it on a Sunday. Man it was a pain in the butt getting the managers to work a dealer transfer on a Sunday.
