Subaru of America needed to do something to spark interest in the 2022 Ascent, and the Camden N.J. automaker is delivering an all-new 2022 Ascent Onyx Edition. Subaru says the reveal will be on June 14, 2021.
Subaru of America said on their Facebook and Twitter pages, "Get ready for a darker, more dramatic Subaru Ascent. The all-new 2022 Ascent Onyx Edition is coming soon and features stylish details as well as convenient interior upgrades."

The Subaru Ascent needed an upgrade like the Onyx Edition in a bad way. Torque News reported last week the Ascent 3-Row family hauler has been on a sales slide all year.
In May, Subaru of America reported the 2021 Subaru Ascent sales for May, and they were down compared with May 2020. Subaru reported 4,310 sales compared with 5,740 last year, down 24.9 percent.

The 2021 Ascent sales year-to-date show a surprising downward trend. Subaru has delivered 23,181 Ascent SUVs to customers in 2021. But last year, 25,318 models were sold through May 2020. That's 8.4 percent less than a year ago.
What is coming for the 2022 Subaru Ascent model change?
We now know a new 2022 Ascent Onyx Edition is coming soon. All 2022 Subaru Ascent will get a refresh with some new exterior styling upgrades and improvements to the interior. We don't expect any changes to the 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer engine or the drivetrain.
The new Ascent Onyx Edition will likely get new interior upgrades over the standard model. We know it will be offered in an Onyx Black exterior color. Look for the Onyx Edition to also get the next-generation EyeSight X driver-assist technology.
The 2022 Subaru Ascent base, Premium, Limited, Touring, and new Onyx Edition pricing and model changes have not been announced. The new 3-Row family hauler models should arrive at retailers this summer. Torque News will bring you further 2022 Ascent Onyx Edition details on June 14.

Lol, the sales slide is due to lack of inventory, I sell Subarus and we can't keep ascents in stock.

The sale slide is also because their 2019-2020 versions are a bust. Word gets out quickly about their transmission problems. Mine is in the shop now for a brand new transmission. 40K miles. Class action law suite in the works too.
Poor 2nd gear in the CVT. MPG is not as advertised for the 2.4T engine either.

It probably has more to do with Consumer Reports panning the Ascent due to first-year reliability woes...

But yet even with sales not being strong with the Ascent, they'll continue to ask way more than folks are willing to pay for an SUV in an uber competitive segment, especially considering the competitors are offering more hybrid/EV options and more established reliability. The Highlander will continue to dominate, and even the new Kia Telluride is taking over the streets. We'll see if the Onyx Edition can garner some positive attention to the model lineup, but otherwise SoA is just asking too much for what they're offering against the competition.

As time 2ent by, the rating fell like a rock, , because of engine failures. and possibly transmissions. I was discapointed ,with the release of the 2022 with previous boxer engine. I will not buy.

I just do not see the appeal. The Outback Onyx appeals to the people who camp and go offroad a bit. However, the Ascent seems too large.

To Big?! Duhhh, its a designed 3rd Row, do you understand physics at all? Or did you think it was for your Barbie dolls?
Believe me, the Ascent is not
Believe me, the Ascent is not too big to off road. I have many thousands of miles off roading my Ascent all over the country. Look me up (Subaru Ambassador Robert) on Facebook and YouTube. The Ascent is beastly capable, especially with our lower gearing (4.44:1) and powerful drivetrain.
I mean there is no difference
I mean there is no difference between a standard outback and an ONYX other than black trim, waterproof interior, and a full size spare.
Why can't they do the same for the Ascent if only just for the blacked out trim, families will love waterproof interior, and a full size spare is always appreciated
