North America customers are the only ones who get the new 2020 Subaru Outback made in Indiana.
The all-new 2020 Subaru Outback is set to arrive in dealer showrooms in August and Subaru begins building it for North America customers next month. There’s a cool story from autoNXT that explains how it’s made. We will give you the high points so you can see how it’s born. They recently toured the U.S. Subaru plant and came up with some cool insights into how the new SUV is born.
For starters, the all-new seventh-generation 2020 Subaru Outback is made at Subaru’s only plant outside of Japan. Subaru Indiana Automotive is one of the cleanest and safest assembly plants in the world, and it ‘s located among the cornfields of central Indiana.
Subaru also manufactures the new Subaru Ascent family hauler there along with the new 2020 Legacy sedan, Impreza sedan, and 5-Door compact cars. The massive complex of buildings covers more than 800 acres, and the plant has around 4.4 million square feet where factory workers work around the clock in three shifts. There are two assembly lines, and one shift does maintenance work and produces spare or replacement parts. SIA is projected to produce around 370,000 vehicles in fiscal year 2019.
How Outback is born
The 2020 Subaru Outback starts out as a roll of steel that’s cut and stamped into the required parts to build the all-wheel-drive SUV. The report says Subaru uses five multistory machines to cut out vehicle parts by applying up to 4,500 tons of pressure with a variety of cutting dies. The dies come from Subaru Corporate in Japan and are kept for up to 10 years to make replacement parts.
The newly-stamped parts for the body and doors are welded together by more than 1,600 robots in the body assembly area to create the vehicle shell. They are then sent to the paint shop where it takes about 8 hours to gets its new Wilderness Green Metallic color among others.
When the mid-size SUV is complete, around 5,000 parts have gone into making the new 2020 Subaru Outback. The total time to make the new all-wheel-drive vehicle is about 16 hours, and one rolls off the SIA assembly line every two minutes.
Within three days the newly-redesigned Outback SUV/Crossovers will be loaded onto a truck or train for distribution throughout the country. Subarus built in the Indiana plant are for North America customers only, and no vehicles get exported from this assembly plant. Look for the all-new 2020 Subaru Outback to arrive in dealer showrooms in August. It’s born in America only for you.

Article is wrong. Plant
Article is wrong. Plant exports to Canada with Canadian specifications.
We make Canadian spec
We make Canadian spec Outbacks/Legacies/Imprezas/Accents and export to Canada. It's the North America market we build for.
I wish this were true. Would
I wish this were true. Would much rather have a Japanese Outback. Our Japanese WRX is better built than our Indiana built Outback. Unfortunately, Subaru of indiana supplies Canada.
Where built is just math. If
Where built is just math. If parts/assemblies can come from where the engineers designing them and their creation, they do that. If the total cost of shipping any of it as an import is prohibitive, they source materials and fabricate in the market where products will sell.
Blame the economic functions for what's on the left of the equals sign, but shopping starts at the right of it. Why Wal*Mart has more customers than Saks Fifth Avenue. Despite popularity of MUSA, what comes to the register is most often picked by price.
The not "made" in USA concern is better addressed to Ford, GM and Chryler (and their Maquiladoras) who won't touch this market segment so it remains a niche of non-"domestics" like Subaru.
