Low inventory levels are affecting Subaru Forester and Crosstrek SUV buyers.
Auto industry inventory levels are at near record highs and buyers have a wide selection of vehicles unless you are buying a Subaru. Subaru of America (SOA) has the opposite problem and has a limited number of Forester SUVs and Crosstrek compact SUVs to sell you. What does it mean for customers?
According to a report from Automotive News, Tom Doll told them in a recent interview, that they have around a 20-day supply of the newly-redesigned Forester, and a 19-day supply of the second-generation Crosstrek compact SUV. Both vehicles are built at their factory in Japan. As a comparison, FCA US has a 90-day supply, Ford an 84-day supply, and General Motors an 83-day supply of their most popular SUVs.
According to the Automotive News Data Center, Subaru has one of the lowest inventory levels in the U.S. of any automaker. As of April, 1, SOA has a total of 74,600 total vehicles in their U.S. inventory. General Motors and Ford have ten times that number. GM has 835,500 cars and trucks on their dealer lots and Ford has 715,600 total vehicles waiting to be sold.
Buy now or wait
In the interview, Doll says, ”Some retailers may have vehicles but they're not really the cars that customers want. We have to make sure we do a good job, making sure we're paying attention to which models are selling, which trim levels, option packages, engines so that we can match up the production with the expected demand.”
Customers won’t have the best selection of two of Subaru’s most popular models, the 2019 Forester and 2019 Crosstrek, and may have to settle for the color or trim they don’t really want if they want the new vehicle today. If you can wait, order the trim level with the options you want from the dealer, and you can get your specific model in a few weeks when it arrives from Japan.
