The 2022 Subaru Forester, 2022 Outback, 2021 WRX, 2022 Impreza, and 2022 Legacy are ranked #1 by Consumer Reports in a critical area. Check out why styling is not it.
The 2022 Subaru Forester, 2022 Outback, 2021 WRX, 2022 Impreza, and 2022 Legacy all come with a feature consumers may not know. Most car shoppers don’t think of outward visibility when looking for a new car or SUV, but it’s an important feature. But excellent visibility and safety are what you get with Subaru vehicles.
Consumer Reports says there is a clear difference, and they are tops in their class when you get behind the wheel. The 2022 Subaru Forester is still the best when it comes to outward visibility in the Compact SUV class. The two worst vehicles are the Ford EcoSport and Mazda CX-30.
The Forester is rated tops in exterior design because the driver’s view is “unobstructed by roof pillars, head restraints, or small windows,” says CR. They also evaluated the previous-generation Forester best for visibility.
Visibility is a core value for the brand, and Subaru has kept its conservative exterior design for this reason. Raked rooflines in the competitor’s SUVs look cool, but they also don’t allow drivers to see their surroundings. Subaru Outback, WRX, Impreza, and Legacy were also ranked the best in their categories.
The 2022 Subaru Outback is ranked number one in outward visibility in the Midsize SUV Two-Row category. The two worst are the Jeep Wrangler and the Nissan Murano.
The 2021 Subaru WRX is the best vehicle in the Sports and Sporty Cars category. Before its next-generation debut this week, the WRX is selling fast, and drivers have the best visibility in the segment. The worst sports car is the Chevrolet Camaro.

In the Compact Sedan category, the 2022 Subaru Impreza is the best small car in visibility. The worst is the Mazda3. The fifth Subaru model with the best outward visibility is the 2022 Legacy that wins the Midsize car category. The worst is the Honda Clarity.
Other models with the best visibility are the Kia Rio (Subcompact Cars) worst is the Chevrolet Spark. Kia Soul wins the Compact Hatchback; the worst is the Toyota C-HR. The best Midsize 3-Row SUV is the Honda Pilot; the worst is the Mazda CX-9.
Luxury Vehicles
2021 Infiniti Q50 is best in the Luxury Compact Car segment; the worst are the Kia Stinger and Mercedes-Benz CLA. The 2021 Lexus ES is the best Luxury Midsized Car; the worst is the Porsche Taycan. The Audi Q5 is best in the Luxury Compact SUV segment; Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the worst. Land Rover Range Rover Sport is the best Luxury Midsize SUV; the worst is the Tesla Model X.
The 2022 Subaru Forester, 2022 Outback, 2021 WRX, 2022 Impreza, and 2022 Legacy are all ranked #1 by Consumer Reports for having excellent outward visibility. It’s an essential value consumers don’t always think about when shopping for a compact or midsize SUV, sports car, compact car, or midsize sedan.

As the owner of a Forester, I
As the owner of a Forester, I can say that the visibility is the best of its many great features. It's shocking how much better it is in this regard than most of its peers.
As an owner of a 2021 Outback
As an owner of a 2021 Outback, I am not sure how it rated so well.
I am 6'1" and the rearview mirror blocks a substantial portion of the windshield when looking out to the right (where children step off the curb).
Shoulder-checking is more cumbersome to do than in my 2007 Toyota Matrix.
The view out back of the Outback is very good.
Thank goodness for all the amazing sensors and safety features. They definitely come in handy.
