Subaru of America will launch an all new 2021 Subaru Outback Wilderness edition model this year, but how wild will the all-new wagon be?
Subaru of America asked for more rugged Forester and Outback models, and U.S. customers will get the Outback Wilderness in 2021. Torque News reported on the new Wilderness models last November, and Subaru teased two new images about letting customers know a little more this week. Subaru says the global reveal will be on March 30, 2021.
Here is what we know. The 2021 Outback Wilderness will launch first, with the Forester Wilderness to follow later this year. The Outback will be built in Lafayette, Indiana, and the Forester is manufactured at the Yajima plant in Japan.
How wild will the Outback Wilderness be?
The new Wilderness trim will be more than an appearance package. "The Wilderness is going to give additional capabilities in those car lines, additional style, and the look of off-roading to a greater degree than we have right now," said Wally Sommer, president of Sommer's Subaru in Mequon, Wisconsin. "It does fit the Subaru character perfectly."
In February, Patrick Wergin, chairman of the Subaru National Retailer Advisory Board, told retailers that the new Wilderness models would feature a "rugged appearance package and better tires for off-road pursuits."
We are guessing Subaru will use the Outback XT model with the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine producing 260 horsepower and 277 lb.-ft. of torque. It wouldn't make sense to have a Wilderness pack with a more rugged character and use the 2.5-liter normally-aspirated engine with 182 horsepower and 176 lb.-ft. of torque.
Reports say the Outback Wilderness will come with a raised suspension, more than 8.7-inches of ground clearance on the standard model, additional body cladding, new fog lights, and all-terrain tires.
Also, look for the Wilderness trim to feature unique interior trim with special colors and stitching on the seats, dash, door panels, and unique floor mats. The exterior will likely feature the new Subaru Wilderness logo on the rear liftgate.
The 2021 Subaru Outback Wilderness will break cover on March 30, 2021. Torque News will cover the unveiling and first information. Stay tuned.
