The 2021 Subaru Outback gets another award. See why it's picked Car and Driver Editor's Choice best Station Wagon for 2021.
The Car And Driver Editor's Choice awards are out, and the 2021 Subaru Outback gets picked for a top award. The Outback gets the top award in the station wagon category, and it's in good company. It scores the best wagon alongside luxury brand models like the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Mercedes-Benz AMG E63, Volvo V60, V60 Cross Country, V90, and V90 Cross Country wagons.
Is the Outback a wagon or an SUV? Car and Driver picked the 2021 Subaru Outback for its standard all-wheel-drive, extra ground clearance (8.7-inches), all-weather and off-pavement capabilities, spacious cabin, tons of available technology, and it gets top safety scores.
According to Car and Driver, the verdict on the redesigned six-generation Outback is: " It's useful, rugged, and family-friendly, the Subaru Outback is a station wagon with an adventurous side."
Is there a downside to the 2021 Subaru Outback?
Car and Driver says the Outback has "unhurried acceleration, ho-hum driving dynamics, and indistinct exterior styling." They drove the Outback with the 2.5-liter engine and the 2.4-liter turbocharged engine and complained about the Outback's CVT automatic transmission being "recalcitrant" or uncooperative.
Why is the 2021 Subaru Outback the right choice for wagon or SUV shoppers?
The Outback is a wagon but offers the utility and cargo-carrying ability of an SUV. Consumers who buy the Outback like its car-like ride not found in a typical SUV.
The 2021 Subaru Outback also gets the highest crash scores of any SUV. The Outback earned a Top Safety Pick + winner from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), and all trims come with Subaru's EyeSight driver-assist technology.
What is the price of the 2021 Subaru Outback?
The 2021 Outback comes in seven trim levels, base $27,845, Premium ($30,095), Limited ($34,645), Onyx Edition XT ($36,195), Limited XT ($38,545), Touring ($39,045), and Touring XT ($40,995). Pricing includes $1,050 destination. Consumer Reports says the average market price is $27,485 for the Premium trim after dealer incentives.
The next-generation 2021 Subaru Outback is rugged, fuel-efficient, family-friendly, safe, with SUV utility, which makes it a Car and Driver Editor's Choice in the wagon category.

30 years ago, my grandmother
30 years ago, my grandmother called my Jeep Cherokee a “station wagon” and it used to annoy me. Now after owning 3 different Outbacks, I couldn’t care less what people call it. The categorization is just for marketing and award metrics so, who cares?
