Here’s the specs on the new 2015 Mercedes AMG GT 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine. And it’s impressive.
The all-new 2015 Mercedes AMG GT is an impressive performance car. It’s 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine is what makes it even more impressive. Mercedes-AMG has produced an impressive engine that Mercedes says is “bigger than the sum of its parts.” Its future technology will launch the newest AMG from Affalterbach.
Mercedes-AMG is never standing still and this is their second fully independently developed performance vehicle following the SLS AMG. The new AMG 4.0 Liter V8 Biturbo engine will set this high-performance car apart from the rest of the competition. It features a compact design, high power-to-weight ratio, great fuel efficiency and it’s called the AMG M178 engine.
What are the AMG M178 specs?
Mercedes-AMG has officially announced that the 2015 Mercedes AMG GT will be powered by a twin-turbocharged four-valve-per-cylinder 4.0-liter V8 gasoline engine that produces 503 hp at 6,250 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque between 1,750 and 4,750 rpm. And it produces an amazing 126.3 horsepower per liter. By comparison, BMW M division's twin turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 direct-injection gasoline engine, used in the M5, M6 coupe and M6 cabriolet, pumps out 125.6 horsepower per liter.
Motorsport-inspired technology
AMG developed the new AMG GT powerplant from their involvement in motorsports. This engine is being produced by AMG for the first time in the 2015 Mercedes AMG GT. It includes motorsport-inspired technology like flow-optimized cylinder heads with zirconium alloy for maximum temperature and thermal conductivity, and it all helps maximize performance in all conditions.
It comes with other advanced technology like valve assembly with cam followers and optimized valve springs; Four-valve-per-cylinder design with twin overhead camshafts (DOHC) with camshaft adjustment on the inlet and outlet side enables excellent response and optimizes the gas cycle for each operating point. “Spectacle” honing for minimal cylinder warpage and low oil consumption.
M178 does not have a conventional oil pan
It also features lightweight forged pistons with high strength and a low-friction piston ring package. This front mid-engine 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo does not require a conventional oil pan due to its dry sump lubrication technology which moves the engine’s center of gravity closer to the road for improved driving dynamics.
The engine’s two turbo chargers are located inside the “Hot Inner” V8 engine block to keep the unit as compact as possible. AMG created an exceptional engine response due to the precise routing of fresh air into the exhaust turbo chargers.
Mercedes says the new AMG performance car powered by the 503 hp 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine will make its world premiere this fall. The 2015 Mercedes AMG GT will likely be the most dynamic driving vehicle we have ever seen.
