Subaru of America reports another sales dip with a shortage of new cars to sell. See why the 2021 Forester takes another big hit.

Subaru could sell a lot more 2021 Subaru Forester compact SUVs if they could get them. Subaru of America reports another sales dip in July, dropping 2.6 percent over the same period last year. It's because they have a shortage of 2021 Forester models that are manufactured in Japan.

Tom Doll, President and CEO of Subaru of America, says, "We are immensely proud of our retailers' sales efficiency amidst the ongoing global microchip shortage that has affected the automotive industry."

Even with the inventory shortage, Subaru delivered 12,235 2021 Forester compact SUVs to customers last month compared with 15,313 in July 2020, a drop of 20.1 percent. It's the first time this year, the Subaru Outback outsold the popular Forester.

Subaru delivered 14,058 new Outback midsize SUVs to customers last month compared with 12,158 in July 2020, an increase of 15.6 percent. The Outback, Crosstrek, WRX, and WRX STI were the only carlines in positive figures. The Outback, WRX, and WRX STI posted an increase of 36 percent year-to-date compared to 2020.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek stays hot with retailers delivering 13,402 subcompact SUVs to customers compared with 8,913 in July 2020. That's an increase of 50.4 percent compared to the same month a year ago. Crosstrek also achieved its best July ever, and the popular model posted a 42 percent increase year-to-date, leading all Subaru nameplates.

When will Subaru's inventory levels return to normal?

Reports from sources close to Subaru tell us it could be late August into September before inventory levels improve and possibly six months before they return to normal. Subaru has the lowest inventory of Forester and Crosstrek SUVs, two of its most popular all-wheel-drive vehicles.

One of Colorado's largest volume Subaru retailers has seven 2021 Crosstrek models in transit and only one on its lot. They have eighteen 2021 Forester compact SUVs in transit and no new Forester models on the lot.

It's been a crazy year for Subaru, and it didn't improve in July. Customers who want a 2021 Forester or Crosstrek will wait to get the color and trim level they want. For outdoor enthusiasts, a new 2022 Forester Wilderness sub-brand model is coming. Check out the report below.
