My Weak Subaru Salesman Wouldn’t Sell Me A Bike Rack On Display, Someone Overheard, Took It Off, and I Put It On My New Crosstrek In The Parking Lot

What happens when a Subaru salesperson won't sell you a Thule bike carrier on display for your new Crosstrek? Here's Warren's story and how another employee understands customer service.

It's all about the customer.

A car salesperson must understand the paramount importance of putting the customer first. Here's an intriguing story of a Nissan Versa owner who found himself in need of a new car when faced with a dead transmission.

His choice? A 2024 Subaru Crosstrek

Here's his unique story as he sat signing the papers, a testament to the significance of customer service in the car-buying journey.

After Warren Vasquez's beloved Nissan Versa met its end, he pedaled his way to the Subaru dealership, took a test drive, and eagerly signed on the dotted line for a new Subaru Crosstrek. He had always been drawn to the idea of owning a Crosstrek, but never imagined his 2014 Nissan Versa would meet its end so soon.

On a road trip to Arizona, his bike racked on the back, and his Versa's transmission died. He took the bike off, rode into Subaru of Chico in California, and drove home in a new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek. But that's just part of the story.

As a road enthusiast who loves embarking on road trips and camping adventures, Warren had always believed his 2014 Nissan Versa would be his companion for life. However, the untimely demise of his transmission made him question its longevity.

With his new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, he is now looking forward to a lifetime of adventures, especially the comfort of lying down in the back with the rear seats folded.

Warren tells his story.

I love the car! There are many controls that I need to familiarize myself with. I financed 100% but will pay it off early. They sold me an extended warranty for 3500, which I was leery about. The finance guy said it's good insurance considering the electronics involved, but I'm not entirely convinced.

I'm a road dog and love taking road trips and camping. I thought my 2014 Nissan Versa would last forever, but I'm not so sure since my transmission died. I plan on keeping the Crosstrek forever, and I love that I can lie down in the back with the rear seats folded down.

The dealership just asked me to come in for "redelivery" to ensure I know how to use the car. They probably want to sell me some more stuff as well. I want to get a hitch, but I can do that myself. I'm thinking about towing a small trailer in the future.

I live in Southern California. I'm a union electrician working out of Local 11 in Los Angeles. Work is a little slow here, so I will probably try working in Sacramento, where the local union needs manpower, when I return from a planned airplane trip to Chicago next week.

I'm so tempted to drive out there, take my tools, and work out of some local union halls on the way that are looking for workers. I already have plane tickets, though.

I asked Warren if he rode his bike to the dealer since it's in the picture above.

Yes, I rode my bike with my friend's son, a Chico State senior. I was visiting him on the way home from my road trip when my Nissan Versa died when I hopped on the freeway to head home.

I started in LA, stopped in Mt. Shasta KOA to camp for the night, headed northeast the following day through Bend and camped for the night in Yakima, went to Crystal Mountain the following day to participate in Ragnar Trail Relay Rainier, headed west towards Shelton and camped out in a hipcamp in Elma while waiting for friends to arrive to share an air BNB for the weekend near the water in Shelton for a birthday party, then headed to Chico on the way home.

I had my bike with me the whole time! When my Nissan was towed to the mechanic, I pulled it off my rack and rode it to the bike shop with my buddy to get a new inner tube and tire. I had a flat on the rear tire but had my pump, tools, and patch kit with me to patch a hole in the inner tube. The hole was on a seam, so the glueless patch was leaking but held air long enough to ride to a bike shop.

The mechanic said my Nissan shifter needed to be replaced and ordered the part. They are closed on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so it took some time for the complete diagnosis, which was ultimately a bad transmission.

I was contemplating the Crosstrek for some time, and once my Nissan was pronounced dead, I figured it was time, so we rode bikes to the dealership, took a test drive, and signed on several dotted lines.

Here is where the Subaru salesman missed an opportunity, and another employee understood that exceptional customer service is the key to a successful car buying experience.

Warren continues.

There was a Thule bike carrier on a car in the showroom that I asked to purchase. My weak salesman said he couldn't sell it, but someone must have heard our exchange because an employee was soon removing the display rack. I put the rack on my new Crosstrek in the parking lot and hooked my bike up.

If the salesman had been smart, he would have installed the Thule bike carrier on Warren's new Crosstrek. But he dropped the ball.

After removing the tire, I folded the rear seats and put my buddy's mountain bike in the back. The next day, I drove to the mechanic to take all the stuff out of my Nissan and head back to LA. I had a plane to catch to Michigan for another Ragnar Road Relay Michigan!

The mechanic called me while I was in Michigan and told me he couldn't find a used manual transmission and that he would install the old shifter and charge me for diagnostics and a transmission flush. He said he'd get back to me - I'll get a phone call later today with an update.

I'm headed to Chicago 10-2 for my son's naval basic training graduation 10-3, returning 10-6, and more than likely headed to Sacramento to take a job call with the local electrical union hall there that is in dire need of manpower.

I have an appointment at Chico Subaru 10-19 at 1:00 pm for a redelivery if you care to join me! I need to learn how to turn the seat warmers off in the Crosstrek. Somehow, they came on yesterday while driving to the LAFC game. I'll drive to Phoenix for another Ragnar Trail Relay McDowell Mountain on November 2 and 3.

Thank you for your time and patience as you read through this extended passage. I hope you found it entertaining and insightful.

Thanks for your excellent articles! I read several before I made my purchase. I see that I have more reading to do on your website and in the Subaru magazine!

Thanks Warren!

We found it entertaining and learned a valuable lesson in customer service during the process. Thanks Warren for being a faithful reader and taking my advice on the new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek.

A Sparky should have shopped online due an extended warranty. Example is my Toyota dealer wanted over 3K for 10 year 100K platinum factory extra extended warranty. I purchased from a Toyota dealer online for $1400.00 and you can wait to buy it up to just before your factory warranty is up. You might be able to get a refund. Shop around!!!

There was no reason to cast aspersions on the salesperson. Selling a display model often requires permission, as now they don't have a display. When buying something in a box, one gets all of the parts, documents, and other items. Rather than being weak, the salesperson could just as easily been concerned about this person complaining later about something missing. I bought a display tv once and they gave me the wrong remote, it happens. But I also got a good deal on last year's model that they weren't selling any more.

To me, this customer comes off as it's all about me me me. I want it and I'm special. If they had described the incident in more understanding tones, perhaps I wouldn't think so poorly of them.

Hi John! Yes, I am special, very special. So are you! So is the salesman! That's beside the point.
If you are the salesman or related to the salesman or friends with the salesman let me say that he was a very nice man, just not a very good salesman.
I sincerely apologize if my tone was not delicate enough for your ears. However, I honestly believe that my tone would not offend over 95% of the people who read this article.
While I was waiting for my paperwork in the dealership I searched online for the same bike rack on display. I couldn't find that specific rack but I could find many other similar racks from the same manufacturer which leads me to believe that the display rack may have been discontinued. Perhaps I was doing the dealership a favor by purchasing the discontinued rack that should have been given to me for free (since I'm so special🤣)?
Take care!🙏❤️

I mean I guess.. if it was for display to show what one can order then sorry sir, you can't have it. Behavior like that is makes such requests get more and more outlandish. People that do not work in the service industry/sales in general do not realize that rules are there for a reason and acting like you deserve it is horrible behavior. The guy that sold him the rack is probably higher up than the original salesman and folded to "give the customer what they want" and in turn, making the other guy look bad just for doing his job.

I was very respectful of the salesman. The salesman did not need help looking bad - he took care of that all by himself. The salesman was very nice. He just happened to be in the wrong job.
I was also well behaved. I asked politely if I could buy the display model. I did not demand that I have the display model. I did not insist or make a stink about it. I did not act like I deserved it.
Some say rules were made to be broken. Rules that are in place for safety or the benefit of society probably shouldn't be broken.
A rule that says a display bike rack cannot be sold is ridiculous.
Don't get me wrong, I love ridiculous! Isn't that how comedy is born?

Hi Denis,

Thanks for the awesome article!

I returned to the Sacramento area on 9-30 to take a job out of IBEW Local 340 for Primoris Electric at a solar project in Sloughhouse.
I stayed in Motel 6 and Best Western for the first week (4-10 hour days), drove back to LA and returned with my camping gear for week 2. My Crosstrek zipped up both sides of the grapevine!
I found a beautiful campsite through Hipcamp in Linden, 40 minutes southwest of the jobsite. The job is projected to last until March. I'll stay there as long as they keep me unless the Lord takes me first!🙏

You were hosed by the finance guy on the warantee. Good news is that if you read it, it will tell you how to get a refund.

They had me cornered in the finance office. 2 finance guys were pummeling me. I tried to say no. They wouldn't take no for an answer. They threw out the Costco 500.00 discount that swayed me. They also said there is a good amount of electronics in the car and the extended warranty is good insurance. Yes, I took the bait🙈

When I was first married in 1992, we bought a new Subaru Loyale (a predecessor of the Forester). Within a couple of weeks, the starter went out. I roll started it (manual transmission, obviously) and drove it to the dealer. They found that the starter had corroded during shipping.

They said it would take a few days to get the part and gave me a small loaner car. When I got home, my wife reminded me that we were going camping that weekend and needed the room of the station wagon.

She called the dealership, spoke with the service manager, and he thought of taking the starter off another Loyale. They had it on by the time I got back to the dealership.

As a post script, the technician left a couple of wrenches under the hood. I returned them when I was nearby the next week and he sent me a certificate for a free oil change!

Sorry you were so impressed with the sales person who removed the display for you. My guess is that your salesman had been told to not sell the display which is common practice for any retail establishment. The one that did was probably one with more authority than your salesman. Even though, your salesman maybe should have asked permission to do what the one you were so impressed with did. I believe he was just following orders.

The salesman isn't weak a lot of times sales people are not allowed to sell display models due to maybe inventory or it could be a liability issue. Sometimes a display model might have a missing screw so it's not sellable it could be any number of reasons not to sell a display unit.

No way this is true. The dealerships do not give away bike racks. A $1000 THULE rack for free. C' mon.

The redelivery is not a sales pitch. It's an opportunity to explore all the features and get your questions answered AFTER you've been driving the vehicle long enough to get over the
new car adrenaline rush. I got a voucher for $50 worth of free gas and no sales pitch. Love my 2018 Crosstrek and the Subaru customer service.

I had a 14 Versa as well that died this year. That car had so many issues over the years, I will never purchase another Nissan. Blown engine at 35k miles, bad cvt at 68k miles and eventually need the entire wiring harness replaced at 114k. This was my last straw and I now have a 2015 Subaru Outback and loving it!! Good luck with your Crosstrek!

This Karen sounds like a Karen. The salesman was probably tired of her condescending attitude. I hope they charged her for the bike rack or she just stole it. Someone should check into it.

I don't know about there. In retail clothing anything that what was on display was not supposed to be taken off and sold. They would prefer you destroy and throw away then sell it. We are told not too but the GM would come and make us look like liars and take right off mannequin. Another customer is not always right anymore.

I lost like 5 min of my life on this toilet reading this. It was literally about a bike rack off one car and put on another and about this guys union job... these kind of articles are the ones people dispise. My guy literally wrote a click bait article. Informs me of nothing.

Congrats on your new Crosstrek. You won’t be disappointed only you got the 2.5 liter 182 hp motor though. It’s a blast to drive and fun too.

Extended warranty for $3500 100% financed you're paying interest on that as well. Never go for the extended warranty just bank that cash for future repairs most problems that would cost that much will happen long after the warranty has expired.
