The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek is a huge success and just had its best December ever. See why Subaru hit the sweet spot with the refreshed compact SUV.

Subaru hit a grand slam with the newly-refreshed 2021 Crosstrek compact SUV. When many buyers in Crosstrek's price range struggle to buy a new car, the compact SUV bucks the trend and just had its best December ever. Crosstrek saw a 47.5 percent gain with 14,957 models sold compared with 10,140 delivered in December 2019.

A new report from Automotive News says luxury cars are selling well, while lower-priced models like Crosstrek ($23,295) are not because many buyers in this price range have lost jobs and struggle to buy a new car. The report says the Jeep Renegade subcompact and Compass compact crossovers are not selling well. But Crosstrek is flying off dealer lots.

Why is Crosstrek bucking the trend?

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek has been a hot model in Subaru's stable of all-wheel-drive vehicles in a year where it's been difficult because of COVID. Subaru refreshed the Crosstrek in year four of its model cycle with a new 2.5-liter direct-injection Boxer engine. It comes with 30 more horsepower and gets improved mileage over the smaller 2.0-liter engine.

Subaru offers the engine in the new Crosstrek Sport trim and the Limited top trim. Subaru also gave the Crosstrek Sport and Limited a new dual-function X-Mode feature that provides a deep snow setting for improved winter traction and ideal for off-pavement adventures.

The Subaru brand has always been the go-to model for outdoor escapes because all models offer its Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. Subaru positioned the Crosstrek to appeal to an active demographic who use the SUV to getaway. Many buyers are escaping the city and getting out in nature to escape the coronavirus pandemic.

What is the price of the 2021 Crosstrek?

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek comes in five trim levels. The base trim is priced from $22,245, Premium ($23,295), all-new Sport ($26,495), Limited with the 2.5-liter engine ($27,995). Destination and delivery add $1,050.

The top trim 2021 Crosstrek Limited with the new 2.5-liter engine has an MSRP of $29,045, including destination. Consumer Reports says the market average sales price is $26,964 as Subaru offers incentives to lower the cost.

Subaru hit the sweet spot with the 2021 Crosstrek compact SUV. It offers utility, cargo carry ability, all-wheel-drive; it also has more power and is fuel-efficient. Crosstrek bucks the trend with its best December ever.
