The paint is barely dry on the new 2017 Nissan GT-R and designers are already working on the next-generation model. Will it have a hybrid drivetrain?
Nissan just unveiled the new 2017 GT-R for the public at the Z-Bash on the West Coast. The sports car gets an exciting new look both inside and out, as well as major driving-performance enhancements and key new features. They represent the most significant changes made to the model since it was introduced in 2007. Nissan Designers are already working on a full-redesign of the GT-R according to Automotive News.
A new GT-R already on the drawing board
According to Shiro Nakamura, Nissan's chief creative officer, the GT-R will get significant changes to the exterior dimensions for improved aerodynamics and also changes to boost the twin-turbo's fuel efficiency. Nakamura told AN, "It's very tough to redesign this car, but we are starting now.” He didn’t reveal when the new GT-R would be ready.
Could it get hybrid power?
Nakamura told AN that the next GT-R must deliver better-performance and that the next-generation sports car needs to get better fuel efficiency. He did not say it would definitely get a hybrid drivetrain. Nissan’s chief creative officer did say, ”Electrification is almost inevitable for any car. If the next-generation GT-R has some electrification, nobody would be surprised at that time.”
The next-generation Nissan GT-R is already on the drawing board and significant changes are coming for the sports car. What we can expect, is the next-generation Nissan GT-R will come with new exterior styling that will be more aerodynamic and a re-tuned twin-turbo V6 that will be more fuel efficient. Hybrid power could bring even more horsepower and torque. Stay tuned.
