The most famous Lexus vehicle ever goes up for auction.
Imagine owning the Lexus SUV Scottie Scheffler was driving when he was arrested. This unique piece of golf history is now up for auction. Here are the details.
According to a report from Automotive News (by subscription), the Lexus SUV that the world's top-ranked golfer, Scottie Scheffler, was driving when he was arrested is now a part of an exclusive auction. Mecum Auctions, the world's largest collector car auctions, is the host of this unique event.
You may recall the incident in May, which garnered significant media attention. Videos of Scheffler's arrest, viewed by tens of millions, led to unwanted publicity for Lexus.
Lexus had high hopes for the PGA sponsorship, aiming to 'expand our reach and engage with new audiences.' However, the incident with Scheffler certainly brought unexpected attention.
Understandably, Scheffler was not seeking the attention that the incident brought upon him.
Scheffler said his arrest was "a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do" during a "chaotic situation."
Scottie Scheffler was in a 2024 TX350 from a fleet of Lexus courtesy vehicles provided by Toyota Motor North America as part of a new PGA sponsorship during the run-in with police outside the Valhalla Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky.
He was charged with felony assault and three misdemeanors for allegedly striking an officer with the Lexus in the aftermath of a fatal pedestrian crash.
The arresting officer said he was directing traffic when Scheffler pulled up in the black Lexus SUV bearing official PGA Tour markings and that he was dragged to the ground by Scheffler's vehicle as the golfer slowly drove toward the club.
The police officer said he injured his left wrist and knee in addition to damaging his pants "beyond repair."
However, the charges were later dropped.
The May 17 incident happened only about a month after Lexus signed on as the Official Vehicle of the PGA Championship and two other PGA of America tournaments. Scheffler was handcuffed outside the golf course and briefly taken to jail.
After being taken to the police station, Scottie Scheffler returned in a Range Rover to shoot a five-under-par 66 that day. He finished the event tied for eighth place.
