A new study from Consumer Reports (by subscription) says the 2021 Subaru Forester now scores the best compact SUV under $25,000 for its standard safety systems.
The best nine compact SUVs also score high in CR's road tests, reliability ratings, standard safety systems, and IIHS crash tests. The 2021 Subaru Forester is number one with an overall score of 89, ahead of the Mazda CX-5 (83), Honda CR-V (82), Lexus UX (81), Hyundai Tucson (80), Nissan Rogue (76), Volvo XC40 (73), Mini Cooper Countryman (72), and Toyota RAV4 (69).
Consumer Reports ranks the 2021 Subaru Forester number one of nineteen compact sport utility vehicles.
CR says, "The Forester is a well-executed, no-nonsense small SUV with a comfortable and supple ride, responsive steering, and well-controlled body lean around corners. The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine provides plenty of power to pass and merge successfully, and fuel economy is impressive at 28 mpg overall."

The 2021 Subaru Forester has the top safety score for 2021 from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Forester earned the highest Top Safety Pick+ award. With standard EyeSight safety technology, Subaru Forester received a "Superior" rating in front crash prevention from the IIHS.
What is the price of the 2021 Subaru Forester?
The 2021 Forester comes in five trim levels, and the base trim has an MSRP of $25,845, Premium ($28,845), Sport ($30,445), Limited ($32,445), and Touring ($35,945). Pricing includes a $1,050 destination and delivery fee. CR says the average transaction price for the well-appointed 2021 Forester Limited trim is $31,728 after dealer incentives.
What is Forester's fuel mileage?
The Forester has an EPA fuel mileage estimate of 26/33 city/highway mpg and 29 combined mpg. How does it stack up against the competition in real-world testing? In CR's testing, they achieved 20/38 city/highway and 28 combined mpg, considerably better than the EPA's highway rating.
The 2021 Subaru Forester is a safe, compact SUV with all trim levels coming with standard active safety systems. Consumer Reports says it's now ranked number one overall ahead of the top-selling Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
