The Vincentric Best Value In America Awards are out, and Subaru was shut out in 2022. Last year, the 2022 Subaru Outback was the best midsize SUV. See which model the Outback loses to in the latest awards.
Every year, Vincentric measures the lowest cost-of-ownership among car brands and segments to determine its Best Value In America Awards. Last year, the 2022 Subaru Outback was the best midsize SUV but lost to the Hyundai Palisade in the 2022 model year awards. This year, the Subaru brand gets shut out and earns no segment awards. Check out the complete list here.
Vincentric measures the lowest cost-of-ownership using eight cost factors: depreciation, fees, taxes, financing, fuel, insurance, maintenance, opportunity cost, and repairs. A statistical model identified winners by measuring which vehicles had lower than expected ownership costs given their market segment and price.
The 2022 Subaru Forester compact SUV, 2022 Outback midsize SUV, 2022 Crosstrek subcompact SUV, and 2022 Ascent 3-Row SUV do not rank highest in their category. The Jeep Wrangler takes the top compact SUV spot, Hyundai Palisade the best midsize SUV, Toyota C-HR best subcompact SUV, and Ford Expedition best Large SUV.
Toyota wins the best passenger car, SUV, and Van brand, Lexus is the luxury car brand winner, Lincoln is the best luxury SUV brand, and Ford wins the truck brand award.
What do other studies reveal about the Subaru brand?
According to Kelley Blue Book's 2021 5-Year Cost to Own Awards, the 2021 Forester, 2021 Subaru Outback, and 2021 Subaru Ascent scored among the eleven best new SUVs. Forester was the best compact SUV, Outback won the Two-Row SUV segment, and Ascent took home the Three-Row SUV trophy.
In 2020, Subaru was the best passenger car brand in Vencentric's best value awards and won the compact car, compact hatchback (Impreza), and best midsize SUV (Outback) awards. In last year's Vincentric Best Fleet Value In America 2021 awards, the 2021 Subaru Outback, Crosstrek, and Legacy scored the lowest cost-to-own awards.
Why is Subaru shut out of the 2022 Vincentric Best Value Awards? While it doesn't reflect cost-to-own, dropping sales last year has hurt the Japanese automaker's image and perceived value provided to buyers. Subaru has not raised prices significantly, which would not have affected their market segments. Still, the opportunity to buy a new 2022 Forester, Outback, or Crosstrek slipped because of the lack of new model inventory.
