The new-generation Subaru Outback and Legacy are coming next, but don’t expect big changes on the outside.
The Subaru Outback SUV/Crossover and Legacy sedan are the next models in the stable to get a complete remodel but don’t expect much change on the exterior sheet metal. Just take a look at the 2019 Forester SUV to get an idea of what Subaru has in mind. The big changes will come underneath with the new Subaru Global Platform. It will improve driving dynamics, increase cabin space, and improve safety as it has in the all-new second-generation Crosstrek.
The design language outside will remain conservative, at least with Outback and Legacy. We can see it in recent spy photos from Motor1 of the next-generation 2020 Legacy. They show a lot more of the new sedan than the previous, heavily concealed test mule, and provides even more evidence that the next-gen Legacy will look a whole lot like the current one.
It’s not surprising design changes are minor for the new generation of Subaru's midsize sedan because Subaru doesn’t like to take risks. The new Forester has been criticized for its conservative styling, and it will continue with Legacy and Outback.
The Subaru Outback SUV/Crossover is surprisingly selling better than all other vehicles in the brand’s stable and Subaru doesn’t want to mess with success. Even without a remodel, the wagon is setting new records and leading the charge. When Outback does get the new SGP in 2019, look for the new model to skyrocket with consumers looking for an SUV alternative all-wheel-drive vehicle.
The Legacy is the only sedan in America that comes standard with all-wheel-drive, but sales are slipping as they have with all sedans in the U.S. market. Legacy will get the new SGP in 2019 and it will help revive interest in the sedan as sales have been steadily dropping the past three years.
Subaru will likely debut the new Legacy in early 2019 and have it in showrooms before the end of the year as a 2020 model year product. The Outback will follow, but don’t expect big design changes for either one.

Thanks for managing
Thanks for managing expectations Denis. Subie fans have learned the hard way as the prototypes build excitement then reality sets in with the production models.
I anticipate feedback
I anticipate feedback regarding changes to the Subaru Outback 6 cylinder engine in 2019 and beyond. What is the comparative reliability of the Outbavk's 6 cylinder engine vs. the 4 cylinder engine?
I just ordered a 2019 Outback
I just ordered a 2019 Outback. The 2019 Forester will have the dreaded stop/start, and I did not want to wait a year in case the 2020 Outback got it.
The 2.5 has had start-stop
The 2.5 has had start-stop for some time. Defeated each time you start with the touch of a button and for good with a toothpick in said button.
Please put the Ascent 2.4L
Please put the Ascent 2.4L turbo in the Outback to replace the old normally aspirated 3.6L six!!!!!!
