The 2021 Subaru Outback and Subaru Impreza's new model change get their first recall. See what happened to the CVT automatic transmission shifter.
Subaru of America and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a new recall for the 2021 Subaru Outback and 2021 Subaru Impreza sedan and hatchback models. The recall is Subaru's first for the 2021 model year Outback SUV and Impreza compact car.
The NHTSA says both models are recalled for a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) shifter lever cable nut that may not be adequately tightened. The NHTSA report says the loose nut may create a safety risk for you or your passengers. If left unrepaired, a potential safety defect could lead to injury or even death.
The report does not say how many 2021 Outback and 2021 Impreza models are affected by the recall. Both vehicles are manufactured at the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana. The Outback and Impreza models affected are built for customers in North America.
Subaru of America and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued another recall of the Subaru Outback last year. Subaru recalled the 2020 model year in December because the car's rearview camera may shut down, reducing the driver's ability to see cars or people behind the vehicle when it's backing up.
Subaru quality seems to be improving, and the number of recalls dropped significantly in 2020. Subaru of America issued only two recalls for the 2020 model year. In 2019, the Camden, N.J. automaker issued eighteen recalls.
When will Outback and Impreza owners be notified?
Subaru will notify 2021 Outback and 2021 Impreza owners by mail or email. Subaru retailers will check and tighten the shifter lever cable nut or replace it free of charge. The recall will begin sometime in February 2021. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. The NHTSA's recall ID number is 21V024.
2021 Subaru Outback and 2021 Subaru Impreza owners can use the NHTSA VIN lookup tool or Subaru VIN lookup here. Torque News will bring any new information about this recall when it is available.
