Subaru Starts The New Year With An All-Time Record - One Model Shines Brightest

Subaru reports a new record for January. See which all-wheel-drive SUV led the way to start the new year off big.

You can bet Subaru of America (SOA) was counting its January sales numbers late into the night. The Camden, N.J. automaker reports its best January ever. Subaru pulled it off by squeaking out 115 more cars last month than it sold in January 2020. SOA reported 46,400 vehicle sales for January 2021, a 0.25 percent increase compared to 46,285 in January 2020.

The 2021 Subaru Crosstrek remains the hottest model in the automaker's stable of all-wheel-drive cars. The newly-refreshed Crosstrek was up 28.3 percent over the same period last year when Subaru delivered 8,131 models to customers. Crosstrek achieved its best January ever with 10,431 vehicle sales.

Crosstrek outperformed the Forester, Outback, and Ascent SUVs. Outback posted a 3.6 percent increase, 11,784 in 2021 vs 11,379 in 2020. Forester was up 0.0 percent and had almost identical sales as the previous January. Subaru delivered 13,207 Forester models last month compared with 12,209, two less than January 2020. Forester stays the top carline by volume.

Unlike the hot Crosstrek, the Ascent 3-Row family hauler sales have cooled off, with Subaru delivering 4,743 models compared with 5,606 sold in January 2020. The all-new Ascent is still the fourth-best selling model and SUV for SOA but is far behind Crosstrek.

Subaru's performance cars are still selling well. The 2020 WRX and WRX STI posted an 11.2 percent increase compared to January 2020. BRZ sales for January 2021 increased 45.5 percent compared to the same month in 2020.

The Crosstrek shines brightest for the Camden, N.J. automaker. The Crosstrek Sport and Limited get a new 2.5-liter engine and dual-function X-Mode for additional off-pavement capabilities.
