BMW Motorsport and Shell work together to produce high-performance oil for the BMW M4 DTM race cars.

The new Shell BMW M4 DTM race car will bear the company’s striking red and yellow design, but there is more going underneath the new livery. BMW Motorsport announced the Shell Helix Ultra logo will appear on all eight BMW M4 DTM race cars this season. But what’s going on underneath that new livery is a new blend of oils that will keep the race cars running fast.

BMW Motorsport engineers and have been working alongside Shell scientists to develop high-performance oils for use in all BMW Motorsport race cars. This development will be on-going during testing and the course of each respective race season.  It will focus on sequential improvements of performance factors such as reducing friction and wear in the engines.

New Shell Helix Ultra premium oil

BMW Motorsports will use the new Shell Helix Ultra premium engine oils that are based on the unique Shell PurePlus Technology. The oil is not produced from crude oil, but is a revolutionary gas-to-liquid (GTL) process that converts natural gas into a crystal-clear base oil. Shell says the main component of oils can be produced with virtually none of the impurities found in crude oil. They also combine the new oil with a selection of high performance additives that actively protects the engines components under extreme race conditions and also keeps it clean.

BMW Motorsport will also use the new Shell Helix Ultra with PurePlus Technology in GT and endurance racing. BMW Motorsport is counting on the Shell oil to give the BMW M4 DTM race cars a competitive edge by significantly helping to improve the performance and life cycle of the drive train. They will come into play during the most extreme racing environment on the planet, on the Nurburgring-Nordschleife. Shell will also support the BMW Motorsport works teams at the 24-hour marathon in the “Green Hell”. The BMW Z4 GT3s will also be using the new oil and will bear the Shell Helix Ultra logo.
